I saw the trailer for this when I went and saw Watchmen. All I can say is that I'm not going to bother seeing it. I'm not even much of a fan of Star Trek - All I have seen is the movies, which I really liked. I was looking forward to this reboot, just to see how awesome they could make it.... But.. Kirk is a punk kid who usurps control of a star ship. Well.. thats the impression I got. In the originals he was granted it when he was in his 30s, being the youngest person ever to receive such an honour, while in this he just.... Steals it when he's a punk. |

Didn't something similar, but not identical, happen in the original series? I remember one episode where the crew were exploring a planet where some weird, energy life form started killing them. It had killed the previous captain(after which Kirk became Captain, if I'm remembering correctly), and so Kirk became obsessed with it, making bad decisions that endangered his crew. |

You mean any female member of any species in the galaxy? And the previous captain of the Enterprise was Captain Pike. Spock served with him. |

I was so excited for that episode when Wil Wheaton mentioned it on his blog. Didn't actually find it funny. At all, really. That's the best they can do with the Star Trek TNG cast? Really? High point of the episode; Stewie killing off the actress of the one main character that died during the course of the season. XD Low point: Where was Q!? ;_; |

Old and Cantankerous

Pre-movie Spoilers from the comic book: Spock works for a resistance on Romulus for awhile trying to encourage new thoughts and peace between Vulcans and Romulans. Eventually he is allowed to become a citizen, which he does, and he is the Federation's Ambassador for the planet. He still pursues some scientific research and finds a somewhat nearby star that is at risk of destroying Romulus. Nero works as a miner and is about to make a sweet haul when the star acts up. He barely gets his crew out in time. The star basically goes nova, and whatever gets consumed is added to the energy to the star so the next time it goes nova it becomes even bigger. When Spock talks to the Romulan Council about his findings he is shot down, even with Nero's account of the dangers of the star. Nero decides to help Spock out in mining an unstable element that can be converted into red matter which can then be used on the star to stop it. Only Vulcans have the technology to make red matter so Nero is putting himself and his crew at a lot of risk. They are pretty successful in mining, get attacked by... Remans I think it was. They get soundly trounced by the Enterprise when it shows up and Data is the Captain. Nero is welcomed aboard and while he is in his suite he reviews the database for all information he can, including info about the Enterprise's past incarnations, its crew, and its captains. Vulcan dickheads don't cooperate because they are afraid it is going to be used against them. It takes them a long time to even reach this decision. Nero leaves to return to his wife and his unborn son after being fed up with politics of both races, but he swears revenge if anything should happen to his wife. Yup, star goes nova and kills his wife. Romulan tradition has them paint their skin as part of their grieving, but Nero and his crew go for tattoos. The Romulan Council saved themselves. Nero promptly stabs one with that funky spear seen in the trailer and presumably off panel he kills the rest after getting the codes on how to access the intended shelter for the Council... which also includes a device adapted from Borg technology that turns Nero's little mining ship into a gigantuan self repairing and planning dreadnought. A bunch of federation ships get maimed. Worf shows up with other Klingons to try to slow the thing down, get their asses kicked, Worf flies on a shuttle to surrender, but of course him and other Klingons go in, kick ass, and Nero hentacles Worf through the chest in a surprise attack from the ship itself. Spock, Picard, Data, and LaForge (who now makes his own ships) decide on their own to make red matter, piss everyone off, stop the star, and at least save Vulcan, Earth, and the current Klingon homeworld. Spock is to fly the Jellyfish (LaForge's newest ship) to stop the star. Everyone else goes to try to stop Nero. Data chooses to let down Enterprise's shields so that a skewered Worf can be teleported to the Enterprise and get medical attention. They manage to get the shields up fast enough to survive Nero's barrage. Nero leaves to try to stop Spock. Nero and Spock both get sucked up into the black hole that was created by red matter + star. |

Oo that sounds convulted. Just so how does this even tie into the movie? Nero goes pissy and decides to fuck up with the past for the lulz but ends up running into James T Kirk and alters history? |

Not as core cast members, but I meant as a cameo, since they are apparently linked to the backstory. |

Well, tomorrow's the big day. Who all is gonna see the movie at midnight? I am a little surprised that Ebert didn't like it, given the overall rave reviews it's been getting from both old-time and neophytes alike. |

Just got back from seeing it. The movie was fantastic I thought. It could ave used a better antagonist, but all the little touches they threw in made it great. Fuck the lens flare effect though. |

Saw it last night, myself. Managed to be wonderfully faithful to the original, while not afraid to go it's own way. Nero definitely didn't get enough fleshing out in the movie, though the comic helped with that immensely. I gotta admit, when they blew up Vulcan and Spock's mother died I was a little shocked. But, it worked for the movie, and should make future sequels interesting. Kirk, Spock, & McCoy were perfection. Their interplay was every bit as good as anything from the old series, and I loved some of the new twists they put on the characters. The scenes of McCoy shooting random drugs into Kirk over and over was hilarious. Sulu didn't get to do much aside from his fight scene, but he got the job done. I liked what they did with Chekov, making him the genius teenage nerd, and the scene where the computer couldn't understand him was cute. Scotty was awesome, and the addition of the Engine Troll just made it better. Hope it sticks around. Did NOT see the thing with Uhura coming at all, but I guess that was the idea. Loved the jokes about her name. Overall, it was a fantastic effort, and I can't wait to see what comes next. |

I really loved this movie. It was just a good reboot for the franchise. My only real complaint is that Nero was just basically Kahn 2.0 Only Less Interesting. |

I like how they say that this timeline is just as canon as the original with the time travel and alternate dimensions clause. Also makes it better with Old Spock explaining it. |
