Besides that, it's also in that very same jungle that the Gekiranger later get their strongest mecha, for the 5th Ranger, the Sadaioh, which has an entire arc for its own introduction, separated from the introduction of the 5th himself. Of course, with PR's modern practice of downplaying the mechas, that probably won't help them much regarding footage... |

Personally, I don't think they're really 'playing down' the mecha. The mecha are still an integral part of the series (especially in ones like Dino Thunder, where there's pratically a new Zord every other week - or in Operation Overdrive, where they almost entirely rely upon their gimicks), it's just that writing has slowly gotten better and focus has been placed more on the characters piloting the mecha. Still, it could prove interesting to see where they take that. |

Even though they show the mechas, and there's almost always a battle scene involving them, the battles themselves often are cut or sped up and their introduction recently has been done just by minor comments. They're just 'there', and usually could be eliminated without changing the series at all, besides the action sequences. In Dino Thunder, most of the 'zords' were basically introduced out of nowhere, but, in Abaranger, each one had its own origin and personality. Boukenger was usually episodic, but there was a recurring plot, and most of it was about the Parallel Engine used by their vehicles and robots, in Operation Overdrive, the 'zords' are just... there. |

Had a fun thought about how PR could do its own version of the 30th anniversary movie. Bare concept: The evil energy expelled by Zordon's power surge at the end of PRiS has started making its way back to Earth, and it's not the "send a Monster of the Week and wait" type of evil, either. The current rangers get their butts kicked and end up rescued by AkaRed (or whatever they end up calling him when imported), who reveals that he's Zordon's extremely long-lived son and the very first person to ever possess Ranger powers. He gives them the Ranger Address Book and they collect a massive inter-generational army of Rangers to kick ass. Bonus points if they're allowed to mention "related" heroes like Metal Heroes and Masked Riders. And if I had any say in such an episode's creation, AkaRed would be Kane Kosugi, no contest. |

I don't think him or his bro ever gave a reason as to why they stopped appearing, but it's been like 10 tournaments since they showed up IIRC. I wish I could find some Kakuranger eps. It's a shame that older sentai/toku gets neglected. |

That does sound pretty badass, Amuro. And speaking of 'flashing back,' in a way... I got to see the Pilot Episode Special, done sometime around the time Lost Galaxy was airing to celebrate 300+ episodes. While they cut down the pilot so they could have about 7 minutes of introduction and flashing back done by the guys who played Zach and Jason (Walter Emmanuel Jones and Austin St. John, respectively). Before showing the pilot, we basically got a few moments of fun in terms of interaction between the two and about a 2-minute summary of all the series up-to-date. And, quite frankly, it was entertaining. They also aknowledged GoRanger and JyuRanger as being the sources for the first two seasons of Power Rangers - something that hadn't really been done before. Anyway, the pilot was... different. Really different. Thuy Trang, for example, wasn't Trini. It was someone else, and a far less attr... I mean, a far lesser actor. Instead, we have Audrey DuBois, who doesn't do nearly as good a job. Apparently, Thuy was cast in just after the pilot finished. The command center is, of course, lower-budget... and Alpha-5 looks like a reject from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century's rejects. Seriously, it's that bad. But then again, Zoltar didn't fare much better before becoming Zordon. Other differences featured the guys hanging out in a bowling alley and fighting bullies in said location, the Rangers were pretty cowardly in their civilian forms, stock footage was abused to the breaking point in terms of what they were trying to portray, Billy being even more annoyingly intelligent to the point that he couldn't speak regular coherent English (much less the fact that he knew everything)... ...oh, and Zoltar was sarcastic.
And the morphing sequence looked like certain castmembers were on morphine at the time... Poor Billy, he sounded so uninterested to become a superhero through morphing. I swear, I'm not making this up - it's under the first series' listing, episode #1a at the top of the screen on that website I mentioned. Really, I'm glad this got approved to be sent back for another go in terms of being reworked for a TV show. |

He's the living embodiment of the Spirit of the Red Ranger, so he can use the power of every Red Ranger from GoRanger's AkaRanger on up. And he sounds like Amuro Ray because he was voiced by Toru Furuya. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akared |

Furuya's a more prolific actor, tho. BTW, I swear to God I once heard that the director of Dino Thunder said he was partly inspired by Daitarn 3, and even commented that Tommy filled a role similar to Banjo. Can anyone back me up on this? EDIT: Question for those who DIDN'T duck out of PR over a decade ago...how would y'all rate the series in terms of quality? Based off a couple of episodes, Dino Thunder looks pretty good. |

I'll go ahead and give an approximate rating of each out of 10, and then list what I've seen and not seen of the show itself (if it should be noted) as well so it makes sense... MMPR 1 (Dinos): 6/10. I've seen most episodes of this one, but it's still been a few years. Not perfect, but still the start of something big. MMPR 2 (Random Animals): 6.5/10. Getting better, but the replacment of three Rangers mid-season is rather jarring - to say nothing of the Zord Switch (old Zords that magically turn into new ones each time they're summoned? WTF?). Especially when we go from Jason and Trini to... who did we have again? Rocky and Aisha? As well, at least we got Adam out of the deal, who wound up getting far more development than Zach. Also, the White Ranger isn't as badass as the old Green, but... MMPR 3 (Ninjas): 7/10. Starts out great, what with the Masked Rider crossover, as well as another 'crap, we need more powerfull stuff' moment... but still isn't perfect. Especially since the last 10 episodes aren't even about the Rangers, technically. Also, the ninja angle really seemed forced, considering their main outfits didn't change... or their power coins... or the morphing sequences. Which is a shame, considering their outfits meant for this season went to the Alien Rangers. Zeo: 7/10. I'll admit, I don't remember a whole lot about Zeo. I think I might have just started middle school at the time. But what I do remember is mostly positive. Adam grew as a character, not to mention becoming Green. I also remember the Machine Empire were pretty cool. Turbo: 5/10. Overly average from what I recall. Started out good, but the mid-season replacement of the entire cast really didn't help, nor did the writing for Justin... which turned him into a Wesley Crusher Power Ranger - but without the development that made Wesley cool in the end. When you're rooting for the villain, you know something's off. However, the ending showed promise... In Space: 8/10. Now we're talking! An overarching storyline that isn't episodic? A brand-new setting? Subplots? Awesome! The only things that really held back this show was the acting capability of a certain handfull of castmembers. [Glares at the entire Andross family.] But this really did redeem the Turbo cast, giving them a much better plot to work with. Well... except Justin. But he got left behind. Great ending, too - though the Battleizer form for Andross was ass. Looked like an action figure on a string. Lost Galaxy: 8.5/10. Holy hell, this just keeps getting better! Not only do we have the overarching storylines, subplots and another new setting, but we also have some decent acting capability this time around. Also, if death is your thing, this is for you. People drop left and right - it's like Tomino and the writers of Robotech teamed up to kill off half the damned cast! And this is also the first show to bring in some form of powerup to all the rangers - thanks to those odd Lights of Orion... And the ending was great. I didn't think an ending could take up three episodes before this, but hey. Guess I was wrong. Lightspeed Rescue: 8/10. Another new setting, this time shoving us back to Earth, we focus on the idea of Power Rangers as a firefighting/general rescue force. While it was a little odd, the entire idea meshed well with the storyline. I think the plot was a little 'eeh' compared to Lost Galaxy, but this may also be because I didn't see too many episodes of this one, either. I wound up catching about... half, I think. But I did see the opening and ending - and it was seriously entertaining. However, this is where the trend of cutting the series down from it's Sentai counterpart comes up. While the original Sentai was 50 episodes, LR winds up at 40. And this pretty much continues through modern-day. Redundant as hell theme, though. <_< Time Force: Not Seen. Somehow, I completely missed this one. I've seen about three episodes, and can tell you this: -Theme is badass. -Quantum Ranger is an ass, but a cool ass. Wild Force: Not Seen. Yeah... I completely missed this one too. In fact, the only episode I've seen of this was Forever Red - and that was only recently. Ah well, I've heard it wasn't THAT good. Ninja Storm: 7/10 It's a solid entry, but it's lacking in some areas. The Ninja idea works better here than it did with the third season of MMPR, but it's also a lot cheesier. The three main rangers are also kinda flat - but the three 'sixth rangers' who join up certainly make up for it. That's right, we start out with three this time - and they're not that interesting. Also, the Zordon-clone is a hamster. However, don't expect to have something like In Space or Lost Galaxy - it's targeted to an audience who wants near-slapstick with their MMPR. Also, no tie-in episode with Wild Force, which was a little odd. Dino Thunder: 8.25/10 This is the one you asked about, Ams. While it's certainly not perfect, it essentially takes the MMPR series 'back to formula' for the idea. We're back to Dinos again... but the writing focuses a lot more on the characters and their actions and development rather than their morphing and Zord fighting. This does create a small problem, considering the original show had Zords coming out the wazoo every other episode - sometimes, a brand new Option Part for the Megazord will show up and just randomly attach without an introduction. Like with last time, we start out with three rangers - but at the very least, you'll probably find at least one of them somewhat interesting. And we get two 'sixth rangers' this time around, one of them being the Zordon-like character this time around... Dr. Thomas Oliver. You know, the former Green, White Tiger, Red Zeo and Red Turbo rangers. Only now he's in black and gold, kinda like Jason. The other 'sixth ranger' that shows up, similarly, wears white... but starts off much like the original MMPR sixth did: evil. And he stays that way for almost a third of the series. It's a rather great change of pace, considering the most 'evil rangers' we got till this point was often just brainwashing. Not to mention he's good enough to slaughter the other four singlehandedly. Even the Bulk/Skull-type characters grow somewhat before the series is done. Overall, the show's pretty toyetic in terms of mecha and rangers - the Red Ranger has three different forms alone (Not to mention everyone getting a Super Saiyan mode on top of that, meaning 4 forms of ol' Red), and there are literally dozens of DinoZords. However, they're actually not forced upon the viewer like they were in seasons past - which is pretty cool... but they can pop up out of nowhere at times. In the end, it's a very solid show - well worth watching. However, it should be noted that JDF had other appointments while filming, which left Tommy stuck in random fixes... be it either stuck in amber, ranger-form or invisible. But it all works well anyhow. I've not seen the ending yet, believe it or not, but the rest of the show is just plain enjoyable. However, just to note, the episode count for this show is... 38. We've dropped below 40, and it just starts dropping lower from here. Space Patrol Delta (SPD): 9/10 Yeah, you see where I'm going with this one. Not only do the Rangers start out as a team that just doesn't get along, but they're actually the B-Squad on this police force. Which... well... cleans up A-Squad's Zord fight messes. As you can see, we've got a ways for them to grow - and they do. Upgrades fly fast and furious as the series goes on, complete with four or five different sets of Zords - and nine rangers before the show is over. However, one is temporary and one is only in the last episode. But still... nine. Either way, it all feels right... with the exception of the Omega Ranger. For some reason, he's shafted as a character... never really de-morphing and just being a ball of light or something. You rarely see him outside battle, and even then, he's only demorphed once... in the final episode for a fraction of a second. Both me and Lowe feel that this is probably the one place where they seriously dropped the ball - but that's about it. And the best part? The ending's another three-parter... with B-Squad having to take down A-Squad on foot, in Zords, take down another major enemy, and fight their own headquarters before taking down a world-conquering beast. And that's just in part 2, oddly enough. Combine this with a kickass theme, and you've got a show that's worth the watching. Mystic Force: Not Seen. Literally, I never even saw a single episode of this one. However, this should give you an idea of some stuff: it's 32 episodes long. Not saying it's bad (outside the theme), but it's short. Operation Overdrive: Not Seen, not favorable. I've only seen the Once a Ranger episode with this series... ...and if they're anything like they were portrayed in those episodes, I'm not even touching this one with a 10-foot-pole. The rangers were literally wusses (genetic modifications, weaponry out the ass, vehicles like they were going out of style... and they STILL lost, even when it was a 5-on-2 fight! Admittedly, they weren't morphed... but fucking still!) Not to mention they all just basically gave up without trying to get new powers. Compare this to the first five seasons of MMPR, where they often charge out into battle without worrying about a lack of powers (much less the rest of the shit OO has in their aresenal)... and this entire cast just winds up rubbing me the wrong way. Hope that helps, Ams. |

The only really horrible thing in OO is that the writing is straight out of 4Kids wacky, with really dumb jokes, like a man law joke... considering their primary audience is SEVEN and up, I doubt a vast majority of them got it. Outside of the that, the Red Ranger is an android. o.O And all because his "dad" was too busy lusting after the artifacts of power like the Corona Aurora (replacing the Precious from Bokenger)... You know, if Andrew Hartford turns out to be some kind of end villian for the series, I think we can say Power Rangers is either deads, or invaded by the Kabuto writing staff... or Morosawa. <_< (Take the drink now for THAT joke.) |

Oh, right - a further note about Dino Thunder. Much of the combat is done on-foot... or using their motorcycles/ATVs that somehow shoot lasers from the front. At some points, it could almost be considered Kamen Rider: Dino Thunder. Not that it's a bad thing, but... |
