Somehow who focuses almost exclusively of defense, attacking only when it's a sure thing. In a First Person Shooter, a heavy camper would be a turtler. In fighting games, they are people who will literally just sit and block, countering but never attacking. You know, the ones that always hide on their side of the screen, forcing you to be the one to close the distance and such. |

Yeah, turtling refers to the practice of defending excessively in a fighting game. The reason things like overhead attacks and guard crushes exist is to thwart players who would hit the opponent once, then camp in the corner crouch-guarding and wait for the timer to run out. |

The Revenge meter is a neat idea, but I can't say it impresses me terribly so far. This seems more like a Street Fighter 2.5 (or 3.5) than an actual 4 so far, though there's still plenty of time for them to prove me wrong. |

I'm curious... what were people who are disappointed with it expecting from the game? From S3's comments, it sounded like he wanted more of the parry system, so what about you, Lowe? |

It's hard to say, but I guess I was just really looking forward to something that seemed to be as much of an evolution of the franchise as III was. I was incredibly excited when III first came out, because it really looked and felt like an actual sequel rather than just another rehash with a couple of new features. What I saw in that interview and preview was good, but it made me think more of a remake/revamp of one of the older games as opposed to a new one. Again, I'm well aware that it could turn out to be exactly that later on, but right now it just feels more like Street Fighter 2.5 to me. |

I can see that, but then again, we have only been shown Ryu and Ken so far. It's hard not to look like 'plain old Street Fighter' when Ryu and Ken are all that's around. XD Anyway, I like the idea of the 'saving' system, even if it isn't revolutionary. Ultra moves sound cool too, as I hear they play out as badass cutscenes that make full use of the 3D models. Eye candy is always nice, after all^^. Manly Dhalism is also good news, as far as I'm concerned. STREEEEEEEETCH! Anyway, I'm sure this game will be fun, but I doubt it'll be able to touch GGX2 or Melty Blood. Despite being another 'same game with a couple new characters' thing, Actress Again still excites me more than this does. The was they described SF4's EX Specials does give me hope for at least some of Melty Blood's better points to be transfered over though. |

Honestly, if we're going to get another fighting game in a series, and it's not a side-story/expansion/CapcomSequel, then I want the game to evolve by taking what it did well and running with it. This is how Soul Calibur evolved into the near-masterpiece that is Soul Calibur III, by improving what was good about the series. Sure, we had a few bumps - like with Spawn and that McFarlanewannabe in SCII, but we also left them behind for the third iteration. Even with Dead or Alive, the series took a few steps forward for DoA2: Hardcore (probably my favorite version of the DoA franchise, though) and tried new things for DoA3... even if DoA3 was more of a 2.5. Of course, then they Capcom'd it up and made remakes of DoA 1 and 2... and then brought out the half-assed DoA4, but at least in 4 they were still trying some new things here and there. Virtua(l?) Fighter has evolved as well, adding new characters each time - and making sure that any CapcomSequels are worth the purchase, like VF4:Evo. I'm not a big fan of the series, but you get my point. Hell, even Tekken has made great strides in evolution - and I hate the series completely. But Street Fighter? We've taken side-steps (II's numerous sequels and spinoffs), brief moments forward with little change(Alpha series) and strides back (EX). The only one time we've actually changed the gameplay for the better was in Street Fighter III. I'll admit it, I can't use the parrying system for shit. But it changed the series and moved it out of the early-1990's where everyone imitated Capcom. It was a unique fighting game that, despite carrying over some old characters, felt fresh and new. Now hearing about the new 'revenge' system, it feels like we're getting a game that would be better called 'EX Alpha' for what the Revenge System sounds like it will actually be doing: playing like Street Fighter Alpha 3. |

It'll probably be a bit more robust than 'just another Street Fighter 2', but whether it'll meet your expectations is still up in the air. More likely, it'll fall somewhere between the two. Anyway, my big hope is for a robust single player game. GGXX's branching Story Mode, the adventure mode in recent Mortal Kombat games, and Soul Calibur's RPG-ish mode whose name I never remember because I still haven't given a Soul Calibur game a chance all were exceptional examples of what a fighting game's single player campaign could be. An fighting game with a fighting system that's just average can become something much, much more if it's presented in the right way. EDIT: Looking at your examples, I realized you just compared 3 3D fighters to a 2D one. I guess now I know what you want. XD I kid, I kid... I know what you mean regardless. Just felt like pointing it out. =P |

Well, what 2D fighter has actually grown - much less recieved a sequel? :P Sure as hell isn't Mortal Kombat. Despite having almost 8 games in the franchise, it's still just as shallow and clunky as it was during day one - not to mention just pallate-swapping most characters. Primal Rage? Sequel was canned... and thank lord for that. Killer Instinct? Naah. Got worse for the sequel, keeping what was broken... Dragonball Z fighters could count, I suppose... but there wasn't really a series for the good one (Hyper Dimension or something like that) - and the others were just crappy. I'd say Fatal Fury... but the combat never really improved all that much. Besides, I'm not familiar with SNK's fighting series at all - and the KoF series just never felt right to me at all. |

I liked Mortal Kombat 2, actually, for mastering simplicity in a fighting game. That one's still fun. The newer 3D ones weren't bad either, and actually added something new to the fighting game genre with the switch-on-the-fly weapon styles. Anyway, Guilty Gear has definitely grown from its roots... XX feels so different from X that it isn't even funny. Sure, it still had its little special gauge and Overdrives, but it(arguably) has the most unique special moves for its characters out of every other fighting game in existence, implemented Burst and upped the speed to a level unseen in any other fighter I can think of that came before it. Instant Kills were the one thing it could have done without, but even those are kind of fun. Which is why I love Melty Blood, actually. If the progression goes GGX -> GGXX, then GGXX -> Melty Blood. Sure, it's a different developer and characters, but everything that made XX so great is there in Melty Blood, plus several new features. Having three variations of every special(normal, alternate and EX) was a great touch, as was the implementation of Heat and Blood Heat. Basically, at any time you can turn your special gauge into a timer, sort of like what happens when you turn on the Instant Kill mode in Guilty Gear. Instead of that, however, it grants you HP regeneration and allows the use of your character's Super move, the Arc Drive. If you fill your special gauge, it will automatically enter Heat, but when triggered that way, you can manually enter Blood Heat. In Blood Heat, you regenerate health MUCH faster, have unlimited use of your EX skills, and can unleash your alternate Arc Drive, which is much stronger than the normal one. Of course, that is the only one that comes to mind. XD Now if only we could get another 'true' Melty Blood game, complete with another branching visual novel storyline. |

Shaolin Monks was cool. Especially for the coop. It's just too bad that Scorpion and Sub Zero have the same plot as Liu Kang(aka Charlie Chicken, for his odd Bicycle Kick sound effect) and Cowboy Chicken(renamed to match Kang's title. Also, I can never remember his name). They even kept calling Sub Zero and Scorpion by the other's names. XD |

Ever played or seen Garou: Mark of the Wolves? That's pretty much to Fatal Fury what SF3 was to SF2. |

I love Mark of the Wolves as well. I kinda wish they added Kim's sons to the regular KOF lineup as more than just Strikers. I do love that they did add Gato, B. Jenet, Hotaru, and Tizoc to the latest 2D KOF installment. I've always preferred SNK fighters over Capcom's as far as 2D fighters go. |
