After reading Zero's rant, and typing one of my own, I got curious. What are the long term goals of my fellow guilders? Have some of you already started your careers, and if so, what are they? If not, what are you going to school/working towards?

As I said in the other topic, my plan is to become a Devlopmental Editor, preferably for one of the big name fantasy publishing houses like Del Rey or Tor. I love good stories, I love reading, and I'd love to work with authors who are in the process of writing them. Not to mention the fact that, should I ever sit down and write out some of the story ideas I've got floating around in my head, I'll have made the contacts needed to get the thing published. Provided I've grown enough as a writer to make it worth reading, of course.(I'm still only halfway there-- I'm a natural writer, but have trouble planning out long storylines. I have no idea where to start, and probably wont until I've spent some time in more literature/creative writing classes)

Now isn't this a great topic to discuss among people more or less our age (I just noticed your birthday is only 32 days after mine). XD

During my secondary school years, I thought of studying to become an electronic engineer, though it eventually became obvious to me that I was not very good at it. I then turned my goals towards one of my greater interests; animation and multimedia.

Because of my current university's modular scheme, I am able to select the relevant topics which would get me what I want instead of having irrelevant books shoved up my ass by an elitist bitch week after week. I am well aware that what I learn here in UK is nowhere near the standards in Japan, but I have the obligation to finish what I have started in UK due to family reasons. At the very least, I will study a bit more after getting some work experience in Japan under a certain member here (hopefully).

Obviously, going all the way from home to this undeveloping part of the world (UK) is going to get me nowhere asides from a dead-end job where I learn absolutely nothing helpful. This is one thing I have actually considered at some point last month; whether it is worth doing work experience for a year before proceeding to the final academic year. The conclusion is obvious; for my case, getting work experience is a bad idea as I would be wasting a year in UK rotting away while moving at their pace (things that can be done in a week end up being done in half a year or more).

Knowing no place in UK can teach animation with such decication, I have self-studied styles and skills during my free time as well as make small animations (though a certain project has dragged on for years due to lack of time) and draw every now and then. And I can say that I am learning more than what the university can ever teach me in this field. At least I know I am decently proactive in this sense.

I can say without a doubt that I love animation, and it has been proven time and time again that Japan knows best. Which is why my dream is to be an animation specialist.

I'm currently working towards a psychology degree; mostly because I enjoy the field, and partly for the irony value of it. Not really sure where I want to go with it, but maybe working with children or something "cool" like criminal psychology.

My plan is to win the lotto and spend the rest of my days going to universities all over the world to learn all that there is to learn (and which doesnt involve numbers in any shape or form) and write. Without buying tickets, too. *nods*

Otherwise, I'm aiming for a translation job. I've been doing tech support for far too long, I need something more fulfilling. And with a good salary.

Fascinating, uh?

My plan is to become a teacher for children.

Kids are the future...unless i put a stop to it. God damn kids are getting way too smart for their own age! The best way is to start in an elementary school where they're young; thus making it easy to break/crush their dreams.

Let's be honest. I do not have a dream. I do not fantasize about what I could be in 5 years time, let alone 20 and all that long term goal shit. I don't, excuse my French, give a flottant sottises. My personality tests point me out as a dreamer, an idealist, a champion of grand things. Yet I can't think of an instance when I was ever dreaming about anything but whether or not Tales of Phantasia would get a PS3 remake, or wishing Galaxy Angel I's cast would have bigger roles in the new games. I'm a very shallow and, frankly, disappointingly useless person. If I don't have a material incentive to do something, I lose interest in less than 3 minutes. Conversely, even if I DO have an incentive, I can't last longer than 3 hours. I get distracted, bored, and just downright forget what I was doing and start surfing the web. It pisses me off, but I can't help it. Some might call me a hands-on person, and therefore can't be bothered to sit in a desk thinking of ideas. But then I hate manual labor. I even find watching movies on my 20" to be a chore. I'm frankly bored with life, with the occasional game or comedy anime cheering me up.

What, then, am I doing anyway? Why do I even bother living on? It's like I don't have a goal in life, or even just a general direction. Even surfing the web is a chore nowadays. My current job is working as a temporary replacement for my mother's company until one of her managers comes back from pregnancy leave. I also have to wait until September to start my new MA studies in Japan. I am, literally, empty. So I decided to focus on what I really need in life. And my conclusion?

A fucking awesome computer with the fastest Internet connection on the island.

Yup, that's my dream, goal, purpose in life, whatever you want to call it. It might not hold the grandeur, blind rage, arrogance, hatred and spite that is now synonymous with RaoGaiGar, but unfortunately, it's about all I can muster. So with this goal in mind, I set out to earn money. Not a lot, just "a bit" of money, like several billion. I wanted to be hailed as the King of Fucking Awesomeness instead. So what would my first step be? Setting up a company of my own. BREAKING NEWS: YOU'LL NEVER MAKE IT ANYWHERE WORKING FOR SOMEONE ELSE. And if you do, you're awesome. But 99.99999% of the global population doesn't, and that is why I'll never work as a white/blue collar. It's degrading, it whittles away at my life and builds up stupid, unnecessary stress. That's where my new company comes in. It is currently handling two projects: one of which I have been bound by the NDA to withhold details about, and the other, COSPA Hong Kong. I'll be talking about the latter.

COSPA. Who hasn't heard of it? It provides otaku goods, apparel, clothing items, cosplay items, miscellaneous trinkets so miscellaneous I don't even know what they're used for until I read the manual, to millions of fans across Japan. HLJ, e-bay, Hobby Shops all order from COSPA. But they do so in little amounts, and with outrageous prices. The marking up is so large, I could buy four original items for the price of a marked up one. Sure, business practice, yadayadayada. But like I said, I don't really need much money. So instead, I'm opening a COSPA branch in Hong Kong, directly dealing with COSPA to ship their newest and, if I can help it, oldest goods for sale in HK, expanding into China and eventually United States, at REASONABLE prices. For some, this might be the grandeur and ambition that they see befitting of me (namely my parents), but all I saw was a fucking awesome win-win situation for me. Not only could I earn money from my hobbies, but I can also get the entire selection from COSPA free of charge. It was the closest thing to paradise/heaven/Nirvana I could think of, unless there's some place out there where never-aging lolis serve you meat and veggies every day on a silver platter (with Internet access).

For this purpose, I've turned down job offers from a lot of companies, including Deutsche Bank and Jupiter. They were too small, too far, too uninteresting for me. They were companies that smelled of the proverbial rotten cheese and crappy, dated Beaumont. I've turned from what I would describe as an empty shell of arrogance to a full-blown ego-maniac with too much ambition for his own good. And that's when I found my purpose. But that, my friends, is another story.

PS - if you tl;dr me, I'll hate you forever =)

I'm working towards an RN License. That's right people, I will be joining the ranks of the many Gaylord Fockers (male nurses) of the world.

I flunked out my first try at college, so this is my 2nd attempt at trying to make something out of myself. I guess if all fails, there's always the military...

Oh, and Zero, mind elaborating a bit more? I'm really curious as to what you've done and will continue to do to work towards that goal.

Too long; didn't read.

That's ironic, coming from the fact you actually used shorthand for that.

And despite how much you initially ranted that you don't have a dream, you do have a goal and a path as you stated.

And the "Blue Gene" Supercomputer should net you the power you need to browse the planet at ease while running just about every game to date, and it'w only several million more for bragging rights of owning the HEUGEST and most powerful computer on the entire continent.

You'll notice instead, however, that my goal changed from having a computer to being hailed as the King. Because I'm awesome. And if I'm successful, I'll be introducing two of the largest non-Japanese otaku cultures to the entire fuckwin selection of COSPA. And that makes me the King. Of Awesomeness.

Lolilego.

It's a new toy everyday!

So, will there be a Lolilego Technic with synthetic skin? XD

Edit: After reading your future plan, I remember the good idea you have for me when I finish my Postgrad. We'll discuss winning idea of yours online when time is good.
