Kamen Rider: NEXT!

Episode 2: The Skittering Menace

November 2, 20XX

The subway car cruised along one of the many labyrinthine tunnels that ran under Tokyo in honeycomb fashion, with Tetsuo Amada, a skilled driver at its helm. Tetsuo, though good at his job, had been up late drinking with a friend who was getting married soon, so his eyes were blurred and tired. Still, he had slowed the car down as much as possible without making it late, and the thermos of strong coffee near him was ready to aid at a moment's notice. Fearing he was becoming perhaps too drowsy, Tetsuo leaned over to uncap the thermos, ufortunately failing to see the object which suddenly appeared in the train's path.

The car glanced the object, slipped the tracks, and began to skid to a halt, deposing passengers everywhere and spilling hot coffee all over Tetsuo. The car began to graze a concrete wall which slowed its speed down till it had come to a complete stop.

Tetsuo, being the good driver he was, rose unsteadily to his feet and hit the emergency alarm and called over the intercom for the passengers not to panic, before he reported the accident in to his superiors.

Tetsuo knew he was in deep trouble. He was hungover and something very, very bad had happened. The only thing he could think of to do was to go investigate the incident before anyone got there, so as to have a clear issue to present, rather than allow his superiors to pin the blame on him. Tetsuo bid the passengers remain calm and still until the rescue teams arrived before he pulled an emergency flashlight out of a compartment and climbed through the door outside.

The tunnel was dark and musty, and as the bright beam penetrated the darkness. Tetsuo suddenly covered his mouth with his sleeve as an unusually foul stench assaulted his senses.

"What... the hell happened?" Tetsuo wondered as he inspected the tracks. Hungover as he was, he could still see nothing which would explain the train slipping the tracks like it did.

"Shit... I'm in deep shit..." Tetsuo's shoulders sunk a little before he cocked his head as he heard a strange noise, a split second before he was grabbed bodily and hoisted away into side-tunnel.

"WHAT?!" Tetsuo's scream was loud enough it even reached some of the blissfully unaware passengers inside the car.

"WHAT?! HELP! HELP! HELP! OH GOD NO! HELP MEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeee....." Tetsuo's voice trailed off, his last words echoing faintly inside the minds of the horrified passengers.

And above the passengers, unbeknownst to them, a series of long deep furrows in the concrete explained why, just why, Tetsuo hadn't seen the object as he scanned the floor of the tunnel.

Shuji wiped down the lunch cart, whistling a bit of a tune as he took in the brisque fall air. Winter was fast practically here already, a fact which made him glad that he had brought a jacket along. Soups were the order of the day, along with tea that was boiling as he watched the crowd move again.

[This style of swordplay is far superior to the standard type the Complete Perfection School uses.]

Trying out a number of the stances he had been taught, he combined it with the style's principles to analyze the style briefly.

"Amazing. This style of swordplay completely counters every single stance of my school's swordplay!"
[Yes, this style, when one analyzes it on an initial phase, completely thwarts the Complete Perfection School's sword techniques. But there is another side to that. I will teach you that side of this swordplay when the time comes. Now is not. For now, we will concentrate on learning a few more techniques.]

Throwing out a quick stance, he put the practice sword away in its sheath before making his way back down the emergency stairs to his hotel room. He'd managed to obtain a house in a residential area. Apparently, it had belonged to a family of cleaners prior to his purchasing of it. Maybe he'd open his own laundry cleaning place. Walking into his hotel room, he placed the sword in a long thin bag with other weapons, and grabbing his other things, walked out the door.

[I have to stop by the police station later...]

Ryuji had been sitting on the train, doing his homework and silently cursing his Vespa for breaking down when suddenly the damn thing hit another damn thing and slid off the tracks. Ryuji screamed as he was tossed out of his seat. Groaning slightly, he thought he heard someone reassuring the passengers. "What? What's going on?" He asked out loud as the screaming started.

"WHAT?! HELP! HELP! HELP! OH GOD NO! HELP MEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeee....."

Shrieking, he curled into a little ball and tried to ignore the screams. Oh crap on a crutch...I think I just wet myself, he thought.

Smoothing out her hair, Motoko walked out of a building and smiled as she breathed in the crisp November morning air. Although there weren't many trees in the city, there were still the odd swirling leaf dancing on the brisk wind overhead.

"What a beautiful day." She said as she looked back at the non-descript building she had exited from. She blushed when she noticed a man, around her age, walk over to her. "Oh, hey..."

"Hey." The man, a pizza delivery boy she met a little over a month ago named Hayate, replied as he adjusted the collar to his coat. "I had a nice time, Motorola."

"Likewise." She returned. "I have work tonight, but afterward do you want to grab some dinner or something?"

"S-sure!" He replied hurriedly. "Text me then?"

Motoko nodded, and the two went their seperate ways. As she slipped her hands into her pockets and walked away, she glanced over her shoulder and smiled after the man. "Memo to self, thank Natsumi for sending me out to get Hawaiian Pizza, never would've gotten ahold of a catch like him."

As she headed for the subway station, she stopped when she noticed people milling out, many looking disappointed. "Huh? What's going on?" She asked.

"Subway train derailed, it's a bit of a mess down there. The whole line's been shut down." A pedestrian replied.

Motoko gasped "Is anyone hurt?!"

The pedestrian shrugged. "I don't know, it was pretty loud though...could hear it from down there."

Motoko nodded. It really wasn't her business, there would be authorities on the scene too, an off-duty patrol officer fresh from a lengthy date would probably get in the way. "Better leave this one to the pros, train derailments don't always mean Kaijin."

Slipping her hands back into her pockets, she headed for home. A good morning's sleep before going into work sounded like a great idea.

The sky glared at him in dismay. It was depressing. He had missed the opportunity to catch the Riders from before, and now a new murder popped up. Again. This is my god damned city, dammit. Why can't these screw ups take it elsewhere for invasion? God damn kaijin, aliens and whatnot. Taking his earphones off, Rao sighed. The police was of little help. They merely found the man dragged off according to some witnesses, and a sort of foul smell lingering around. They had completely ignored the furrow marks on the ceiling of the tunnel that had struck Rao as suspicious right away. Kai-bloody-fucking-jin.

"How many times is this now?"

"Drop down and give me 30, soldiers! I don't care if you just ran laps, you WILL do these push-ups, or you WILL have mess hall duty for the next week, do I make myself CLEAR!?" the drill sergeant yelled, as a large line of soldiers began doing push-ups. Among them were Aj, Jake, and Mike, who were all struggling to keep up with the rest. It had been a long while since they did push-ups, but as soldiers, they should have been used to it by now.

"21... 22... 23... Man, these push-ups are killer, especially when you're wearing all this gear. Are we even supposed to be wearing all of this?" Jake whined, as he struggled to continue on. They were almost there at the finish, at least. Mike shook his head, trying to keep his mind on the push-ups, while Aj didn't even bother to answer. Both didn't feel like wanting to go back and do 30 more push-ups.

"24... 25... 26... You know, Jake, I wouldn't be questioning the sergeants methods, if I were you. They did help us get this far, plus if he hears us complaining, not only will we have to do 30 more push-ups, but we may get mess hall duty." Mike replied, as he continued his push-ups. Their arms were beginning to tremble a bit, but they didn't want to give up yet. Lifting his head up, Aj turned to his 2 friends and saw that they were almost done.

"27... 28... 29... 30. I'll admit, it was tough to do..." Aj sighed, as all of the soldiers got up from the ground and stood at the attention. As the drill sergeant looked them over, he began fixing the various flaws on their uniforms, before they were all allowed to return to the headquarters building. Aj, Jake, and Mike, on the other hand, returned to their cabin for a moment to get a change of clothes, before they chose to walk anywhere.

"I rather only wear the JSSDF uniform when i'm either training, or in a battle, to be honest. Anyways, let's go. Don't want to be caught lingering around here too much, less the drill sergeant try to put us into the ground with more push-ups." Aj said, as they exitted their cabin with their standard clothing, before walking the streets.

Letting out a small yawn as she slowly woke up, Jahnavi stretched her limbs out a bit as she rolled her neck out a bit. Sitting up in her futon, the young woman rubbed the back of her neck to rub out a few strained muscles.

Staring out into the morning sky, she let out a soft sigh as she slid out from her sleeping bag, rolling it up soon after.

Still sitting on her knees, she scratched her head a bit, trying to get some of the knots in her hair out. Not having a comb much in handy, she was wondering how she'd be able to really groom herself.

">I can't believe I accepted his offer.<" She said softly in Hindi. After that run-in with the little girl the night before, she agreed to take up Hiro's offer to stay at his place for the night. Though the spare bedroom wasn't very roomy, it was more than enough for her, since she had no plans on staying anyway.

Sliding open the window, Jahnavi leaned out for a moment to absorb some of the sunlight. Back home she used to do this all the time to wake her up.

"I wonder if he's even up yet," She wondered a bit to herself, letting out a lazy yawn and resting her head on her arms which were draped over the windowsill.

The sun was shining brightly. The birds were chirping. The air was cool. The morning in the mountain was just peaceful. But the serenity was disturbed by a loud thud.

"CRACK! THUD!!!" The branch that Nimbus was sleeping on cracked.

"Ouch!" screamed Nimbus as he rolled down on the ground. "Bloody tree! Doing this to me! What did I do to deserve this?" He continued as he kicked the tree.

"CRACK!" The tree was cracked because of the kick. "Oops!" Nimbus looked around to see whether anyone saw that or not. He's hoping that Rao won't be angry at him for cracking a huge tree near his dojo. Nimbus decided to stay at the dojo after the bat incident. He enjoyed the surroundings of the dojo. But now... He did something stupid. He cracked a tree. A huge tree.

Nimbus decided to go back to the city so that Rao won't know that he broke something. He walked up to Victory Tornado and wore his helmet. Then he started the motorbike and started speeding in the mountain. It was THE place to ride your motorbike. It's got obstacles, and no cameras.

I feel a disturbance in the life force... it is as if a million trees screamed out in pain together. Rao shuddered. Strange things happened all the time in this city. It must be why everyone and their mothers placed settings in Tokyo. It was near high noon already, and he hadn't eaten since last night. Heading towards the ramen place under the bridge as usual, Rao went off to fill his growling stomach.

As he was riding his motorcycle back to town, Nimbus' stomach started rumbling.

Time for breakfast! Hmm... What should I get? Ramen? Yes. Ramen it is.

Nimbus decided to go to the ramen place near the park under the bridge. He likes that place. On his way there, he saw Rao.

"YO!"

Rao spun around and glared at Nimbus. I can feel it... the disturbance came from him! Holding his bowl in the left hand and pointing an accusing finger at Nimbus, Rao fired. "I know you did something. What did you do?"

His eyes thinned.

"I know you did something. What did you do?"

"I fell down from the tree near your place. Bloody tree! I didn't do anything to it! And it cracked on me! And I fell down because of that! So I kicked it. And it cracked!" replied Nimbus innocently.

"You broke my bloody tree?"

Rao's eye quivered. Well, that explains the damned disturbance. Sighing, he just waved to the seat beside him.

"Next time... just sleep in the dojo. Like any normal person. And might I remind you, you are kaizou ningen... trees don't support your weight anymore. Especially not when we're into the beginning of winter."

"How many times is this now?"

Walking through the streets, Aj, Jake, and Mike passed numerous people on their way to a decent cafe to get some coffee. It was pretty chilly out, but that was to be expected, considering how close to winter they were. After a while of searching around, they had found a half-decent cafe, before the 2 took a seat. Aj, however, walked up to the counter, and ordered 3 cups of coffee with a few spoons of sugar.

"One of these days, they're gonna catch a sugar rush from this... Well they insisted on it, so the day that happens, they're gonna have to deal with it." the soldier said, as he began fishing in his pocket for some cash to pay the person behind the counter. After giving her the money, he went back and sat down with Jake and Mike, who were whispering with one another.

"You know, Aj, you should just quit the JSSDF and find a half-decent girl to shack down with. I haven't seen you go on a date in like 5 years. What happened man, can't handle the ladies out there?" Jake joke, while Aj huffed in annoyance. He hated it whenever Jake began talking about his personal lifestyle... Though the truth was, he really hadn't bothered to go out on a date in 5 years.

"I'm too busy to be bothered to go out on a date. Now leave me alone on that, dammit." he spat back, while Jake shut up. Mike, on the other hand, reached into his coat pocket, and pulled out an orange envelope. Passing it to Aj, he nodded when the man picked it up and opened it. The first thing he noticed was that it was a letter addressed to him by the Colonel. Whatever it was, it had to be really important.

"Letter says that they're making something that'll help with our... 'pest problem', but we need to keep it under wraps. Not a whole lot, but it says to keep on the look out for details in the future." Aj shrugged, as he refolded the letter up and put it back in the envelope, before slipping it into his coat pocket.

"Ugh..." Hiro groaned as he pulled himself out of bed. He wasn't much of a morning person.

He was very surprised that Jahnavi had actually taken his offer and still wondering why he'd actually made that offer.

"Well I couldn't just leave her out there. It's practically winter."

Hiro left his room and looked at the guest room. It was still fairly early, so he figured he wouldn't disturb her.

"So now what? Didn't exactly plan ahead eh? Well have fun doing 'detective' work around this."

"Bah..." he grumbled as he made his way to the kitchen.

He flipped on the TV.

"Semaru~ E.V.I.L. jigoku no gundan!"

"Oh great..."

Hiro didn't care to watch his show at this time so he headed to the bathroom for a shower instead. He started up the water before removing his clothes. When it was warm enough, he stepped into the shower and slid the glass panel closed. It was quite refreshing.

In his office, Houji organized some files before picking up the phone.

"It's high time I check up on a certain project."

He quickly dialed a number and waited for an answer.

"Of all days for public transportation to start sucking inexplicably..." Motoko muttered as she continued walking. At this rate, she knew she was going to have to get a car or something. But with her wages, she only had two choices.

"I can save my money and get something cheap..."

The immediate imagery of a jalopy exploding the moment she kicked the tire flashed in her mind.

"Or...go to my parents..."

The mental picture of her father trying to buy her an immense SUV (read: Civillian Main Battle Tank) while her mother berated her financial irresponsibility was much more disturbing.

"Like hell am I going to ask my parents!" She shouted to the world, before stopping and clearing her throat. "I need some wheels, especially before the winter hits."

Her stomach growled. Sighing, she placed her hand on her stomach and sighed. "Patience, my pet."

An aroma caught her nose. Looking over, she smiled when she saw the ramen shop she had begun to frequent in the past month. "It won't be long now..."

Hopping, skipping, and jumping across the street, she slipped into the shop and sat down at the counter. She quickly got the attention of the cook. "Hey there, one bowl of the usual, please!"

"Huh? Oh, sure thing Motorola!" The chef replied as he began preparing her beef ramen.

"Understood." Shun said, hanging up the phone. "Hiyori, business calls." He called out to his partner, who was trying to finish breakfast. "Damn it, guess I'll eat later." She said, obviously disgruntled. "Let's go then." Putting on her jacket, she walked out the door, Shun quick to follow her.
