The Rolling Man

This idea occurred to me some months back, and it has been fermenting ever since. Rather than simply throwing together the meager number of mecha shows I've seen, I've decided to work with a theme, that theme being alternate universes. I'm hoping to gather a roster of shows/games/whatever else that put a twist on an older institution. For example, MazinKaiser and Shin Getter, being a "what if?" on the original Mazinger and Getter Robo, respectively, will appear. Right now, my list is quite short... Zeta Gundam Movies As you know, the trilogy summarizes the series, while putting a new spin on an old idea. Such differences include Four's death at the hands of Ben Wooder and the removal of the moon arc. Gundam Wing: Tale's Impulse In the Tale's Impulse manga, the Romafeller Foundation defeats the G-Boys, captures their Gundams, and starts creating mass-produced versions of the Operation Meteor Gundams. The manga follows Tale Nonblue as he seeks out his brother, who hijacked a Wing Zero-based machine. Seeing as how I don't know much about TI aside from these things, I plan on using the Wing cast...which has been altered by such happenings. Heero is in Titans custody, Duo is hiding out with the Junk Guild, Trowa has inflitrated the Titans, Quatre is languishing in Arkham Asylum, and Wufei has gone underground. Again, more changes are present, but those are some of the biggies. Gundam SEED: Original Ideas The infamous Fukuda interview that followed SEED gave us an idea of how the show was originally going to go. Kira would die. Azrael would use Fllay as a human bomb, killing Sai and destroying the Archangel. Athrun would lose an arm. He also implies that Andy was meant to die; so, he's dead. It's also clear to anyone with a brain that Mu was meant to die. So, he's dead. No Neo. Screw Neo. In the ear. (I'll probably give his role to Zechs.) Without Kira around, Lacus went back to PLANT and assumed Mia's role as Durandal's tool, even developing some of her neuroces. See how SEED Destiny plays out with such a radically altered cast. MazinKaiser The OVA Dr. Hell is the big bad guy and Dr. Hell's minions are much stronger. The Mazinger team consists of Kouji, Boss, Jun, Sayaka, and Tetsuya. Tetsuya doesn't suffer from psychological problems. Hell, he and Kouji are buddy-buddy. Kouji eventually gets his hands on the uber-powerful MazinKaiser and...well...I don't really need to go on, eh? I may implement some elements of the movie, too (such as the Mycene). New Getter Robo New Getter is what you get when you take the Getter cast back to their dark roots. Ryoma is a brawler who loves venting as violently as possible. Hayato is a sadistic psychopath. Benkei and Musashi have been fused into a single, loveable, amorous monk. Dr. Saotome is no longer the friendly mentor type, giving off the impression of a madman manipulating the Getter boys for his own purposes. However, the biggest change would probably have to be ditching the Dinosaur Empire in favor of the Oni, Japan's brood of violent, deadly, horned cannibals. Neon Genesis Evangelion, the Manga Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was given creative control over the Eva manga adaptation. In the minds of many (myself included), he improved upon the existing saga with a handful of creative differences. The Angles now number fewer. Shinji adopts a personality more befitting of an apathetic teenager than an angst-ridden one. Toji's fate is different. Kowaru, the Fifth Child, is introduced earlier. Big O During the first episode of the second season (which was entitled Roger the Wanderer, hence the subtitle), Roger sees into a previous "cycle" of Paradigm City, wherein he's still in the military police, Angel is his subordinate, Beck is an upstanding member of the community, etc. Now, I won't be using that cycle, but seeing as how Big O approaches the idea of other worlds, it's in. RahXephon The big thing about RahXephon is the Xephon System, meant to unify the worlds of Man and Mu. It's a shoe-in. Furthermore, the movie switches some stuff around a bit, so I may use that over the series. Martian Successor Nadesico In the final episode, the crew is faced with the decision of whether or not they should destroy the Martian ruin. This could end the war, but it would void all the boson jumping up to that point, thereby rewriting history. That's enough for me, so it will be included. Well, there's that, and I happen to really like the show...and I own it all on DVD... Possible Entries Aura Battler Dunbine I haven't seen Dunbine, but the Earth/Byston Well scenario screams to be included in a fic about otherworldly happenings. Giant Robo: The Animation Like MazinKaiser and New Getter, this is a modern rendition of a retro classic. I've also heard great things about it. Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden Not so much another world as it is a possible future, but that's close enough. Lord of the Elementals La Giars, like Byston Well, is a parallel world of magic and mecha, with several characters passing between the two. It would only make sense to include it. Soooooo....any comments? Criticism? Concerns? Suggestions (after all, my mecha focus is quite small, so if you can think of any shows that would fit the criteria, please speak up)? |

Well, a couple of suggestions... About Rahxephon: I really wish this board had a spoiler tag...anyway, Rahxephon has the power to rewrite reality, as demonstrated in SRW MX where it saves Akito Tenkawa from the horrible fate that befalls him in Prince of Darkness. Of course, since Tuning unites all the different worlds, this could be odd. You could consider using the plot from Super Robot Wars Advance, which has an alternate reality featuring an evil organization called Shadow Mirror, which is out to set as many worlds as it can into eternal war (sort of like Big Boss from the Metal Gear series, I'm told). The heroes would be Lamia Loveless in her Angelg and Beowulf, the SM-universe's Kyosuke Nanbu, who pilots Alteisen Nacht (other than being blue, it's identical to the original Alt). Since Excellen doesn't exist in the form we're familiar with anymore, Beowulf-Kyosuke could be a darker type than his more familiar counterpart, suiting him to the universe's dark outlook pretty well. But these are just ideas anyway. |

I see...well, it's SRW, and they've been known to bend a series' canon. I heard that the Angels were explained as being humans who have lost their Protoculture, a Macross conept. Perhaps RahXephon could be one in a set of three (the set being reality-benders and the three being Rah, Big Venus, and Eva). I suppose I could use post-Tuning Ayato as if he had always been like that and move on from there. It gives me an excuse to finally see RahXephon.
Hrm....that's a damn fine idea. I might use it. After all, if they start passing between universes, who is to say that Beowulf and Lamia couldn't visit both the Shin Getter and New Getter universes or both the Gundam movie and novel worlds? It might be cool to see two different versions of the same character interact. I appreciate all of the input, Amuro. |

Well, a couple more ideas. Carrying the original series plan for Seed into Destiny may be problematic; unless Saviour is modified for one-armed use, Athrun is pretty much SOL (honestly, I found the idea of Andy piloting with a prosthesis to be sort of absurd). Not to mention that even if Strike Freedom is somehow obtainable, you only get a couple of people to pilot, most of whom will already have their own machines. You could also consider the alternate series plan where Flay piloted the Rouge and ended up living through the series. As for G-Unit...I know you said that you didn't want to have a post-apocalypse setting, but with Shin Getter it's sort of required. In fact, you could combine the two. In GU, Grandshario was programmed to destroy the colonies, then collide with Earth. You could be really bad and have the rampaging ship crash into Shin Dragon, replacing the nuclear missile that hit it in the OVA. Also, New Getter deals with a lot of time- and space-hopping, so you could have the New Getter versions of the cast just warp in in the middle of Shin Getter's plot. You could have them co-exist with their Shin Getter versions or supercede them. Once more, these are just ideas. |

Well, one of the Girlfriend of Steel mangas did have the Evas showing up anyway. Need to finish reading it one of these days. If Kelly's still alive and kicking, he could always help Athrun become the One-Armed Bandit. <_< The post-tuning scenes in RahXephon were kind of short and devoid of mecha, but then again you CAN have Ayato tune your world the way you want to. Or you could be difficult and use the manga version instead. <_< Not really any hopping around in Godannar, other than a time skip at the beginning and at the epilogue. You could always fiddle around with the Mimesis' effects on different characters or whatnot. ...and I just realized how far behind I am on my SRW scheme. Drat. |

I figured Athrun would pull an Andy and pilot the Saviour with one organic arm and one synthetic, as corny as that may sound. I didn't plan on either the Strike Freedom or the Infinite Justice appearing due to Lacus' return to ZAFT and the TSA's assimilation into ZAFT in a rather AEUG/Londo Bell-like fashion. Athrun would just have to learn how to use the Saviour properly. But that's not to say that I won't change my mind.
That could work, but I originally intended for the various shows to all be in a single world like most SRWs. However, the idea of universe hopping with Lamia and Beowulf does have a certain charm, so maybe I could write up a world that combines Wing and Shin Getter.
Note to self: See the end of New Getter
Then I won't be bending the rules quite so much...
Seeing as how I know nothing of the manga and planned on seeing the anime, I'll probably BS an excuse for Rah to still be around. |

I thought Girlfriend of Steel took place in the normal Eva storyline, just before the Tokyo 2(or was it 3? Can't remember) was devastated and everyone left. I've only played the translation of the PC game, but the Evas and NERV played a big role in it. There was even a new mecha introduced in it. |

From what I know Girlfriend of Steel 2 is a manga that expands upon Shinji’s vision of a world without Eva in episode 26. I think it does introduce the Eva-05, which is apparently a black MP Eva. |

Well I played Girlfriend of Steel 1... not 2. And that one was either set in the series itself, or an AU version of the series with only minor changes to allow for that particular plot to happen. You want a plot synopsis of it? I don't remember it too well, but I do remember enough to give a basic rundown at least. |

I've never seen GaoGaiGar, hence its absence. I also retroactively update the series list. Yes, I'm a fickle bastard. |
