This is a headache for a lot of new prospective owners. Basically, the piston liners of all original V8 engines were made of nikasil, some sort of magical alloy that was great for racing engines, but didn't last very long (my understanding of it). There is a foolproof test to see if the engine in the car you are thinking of buying is at risk of any problem, it is called a 'blow by' test. Any reputable independant or main dealer will be able to do this for a nominal fee. Arrange a test drive and get this done before you part with any cash. Just to put you off a bit more... Chain tensioners are an equally troublesome topic for the unwary. Check the service history to make sure that the very latest type of chain tensioners have been fitted and by someone who knows how to fit them. Hang on, 95 Sov? That'll be a 6 cylinder surely?? If it's a 6 cylinder car, the above doesn't apply. The engine is these is pretty bullet proof, usually. Examples often exceed 200k. After all that, the X308 is a terrific car for the money, but it is well worth buying from the club magazine where proof of the above tests and replacements will be more easily obtained as members are more likely to look after their cars properly. The 95 cars were X300's until 97? then it was the X308's with the troublesome V8's? surly. Petrol whif will be the tank breathers, prob a small blockage? Odd job's! yepp I've got that one alright! The past owners must have run mine on a very very tight budget, I'm in the process of replaceing most of the rubber bushes! But what do you expect on a car that is 14 years old? Mileage wise, I've read a write up that reckons the AJ16 6 cyl's are good for at least 250K! Edited by xj6aide, May 15 2009, 11:45 PM.
