Age: He has the appearance of a man in his early twenties (actual age is closer to forty or fifty)
Gender: Male

Personality:

Shen is actually remarkably composed and calm. He does everything he can to keep this sort of composure present at all times and he tries to never act in haste. He is of the solid opinion that if anything is worth doing, it is worth doing well, thus taking the time to do it well. He is incredibly patient, willing to wait for others long past the point that most people would have walked away. Because he was born blind, he has developed a deep appreciation for his remaining four senses, and often takes time to stop to smell the roses. He enjoys the simple things, when they are available. Moreover, he seems to enjoy taking time to converse with people and getting to hear their voices. Due to his acute memory, he does not easily forget a voice.

However there is a darker side to this mostly kind individual. He has a deeply seated resentment, perhaps even a hatred, of those individuals who take advantage of his physical blindness. He also has little patience for those who take advantage of others such as himself who have been afflicted with some sort of disadvantage, be it blindness, deafness, a withered limb, or other such state. While he is slow to anger, he is also slow to forgive, remembering things long after most other people would have forgotten them. Other individuals who incur his lasting anger would be those who ‘misuse’ institutionalized religions. What constitutes a misuse in Shen’s opinion is highly variable

Likes: Well-tended gardens, music, summer breezes, and food well prepared.
Dislikes: False piety, false prophets, those who would take advantage of the disabled

Skills:

The Ultimate Ears: His primary gain when becoming a homunculus was an amplification of his hearing to preternatural levels. This gives him an awareness of his surroundings superior to what many sighted people have. He can hear the flapping of a hummingbird’s wings from over five hundred yards (1500 feet) away as a small demonstration of his power. Other ‘tricks’ he can perform with the ear are his skills as a lie detector (by observing variations in the pulse), enhanced tracking capabilities, and an enhanced ability to learn languages/accents by paying closer than average attention to the tones and inflictions of the voices of those around him. The ears don’t always work at full intensity, when they do; they have the appearance of being slightly darker than the rest of Shen’s skin. With the ears has come an ability that Shen is still learning to control on a conscious level, the ability to isolate particular sounds, being deaf to all others. While he can do this instinctively (to protect himself from loud sounds or sound based attacks) he is still learning how to isolate sounds perfectly of his own accord.

Sound Manipulation: This is what has given him the moniker ‘Agony’; Shen is capable of turning almost any sound into any other sound. His favored use of this is to turn the simple clapping of the hands into a high pitched ‘scream’ that causes intense physical pain and difficulty concentrating. The louder the base sounds he has to work with, the more intense the sounds he can create. He has even been able to cause the shattering of glass and induce small seismic reaction through the manipulation of sound. From time to time, he has even turned sound waves into concussive bursts that were capable of breaking down walls. However while he can change the tone and pitch of sounds, he cannot change their duration, so in order for him to sustain sound manipulation, he needs new sounds to manipulate. He cannot manipulate a sound that has already been manipulated, so he much be constantly generating sound our have sound nearby that is being generated in order for his ‘power’ to work.

Weapons: On his person, he carries at least two tuning forks at all times along with small hammers and a flute. Besides the weapons that would give him away as a homunculus, Shen walks with a rater sizable walking stick that has been used as a weapon to great effect on several occasions.

Transportation: His own two feet, sometimes a train or a car when he has the funds necessary to pay for such travel.

Family: Zhong Kuan (father, deceased, natural causes)
Helena Kuan (nee Cranston) (mother, deceased, natural causes)
Ming Kuan (younger brother, deceased, military action)
Major June Rosen (nee Kuan) (elder sister, retired military, active)
Lt. Colonel Simon Rosen, The Torrential Alchemist (brother in law, retired state alchemist, active)
Henry Shen Rosen (nephew, active)
Mary Helena Rosen (niece, active)
Thomas Zhong Rosen (nephew, active)

History:

Shen was the product of a union between a man from Xing and a woman from Armestis. His parents met when his father, a musician, came to Central City for an exchange of music. His mother was a doctor who came to the concert after a long shift at the hospital that had left her close to the point of exhaustion. After the concert was over, there was a reception where the two met. Despite Helena’s fatigue, there was nearly instant chemistry between the pair. Zhong immigrated to Armestis to be close to the woman he had fallen in love with. Just nine months after meeting, they were married. In another nine months, June Kuan came into the world. Shen’s birth wasn’t until almost three years after June’s birth. Even as a child, Shen was still and patient, a blessing his parents thought.

Shen’s blindness wasn’t discovered until he was three months old. Both of his parents were understandably shocked by this unpleasant discovery. Even June, who had not been none too enthusiastic about the idea of a younger sibling, was shocked to hear that her baby brother was blind. It was never determined conclusively why Shen was born blind, however the experience made the Kuans put off having another child for just over six years. There was a debate over weather or not they should have consulted an alchemical doctor to treat Shen, however, the parents eventually decided against it. They didn’t want to risk any further harm to their son.

Shen grew up in the world of darkness, but even so, he was a fast learner. He learned to speak quickly and speak well. He also was a natural mimic, anything he heard, he tried to imitate. His father, the musician that he was, saw this talent for mimicry as a gift after a fashion. Beginning at age four, Shen was taught how to play a variety of musical instruments, mostly focused on the flute though as that was his father’s preferred instrument. Everyone who heard him was amazed by how quickly Shen took to musical instruction. He also learned to read through feeling raised letters and was taught how to read brail. June was partially jealous of all the attention Shen received, so she attempted to get attention back by studying alchemy. The attention from both of the siblings switched to Ming shortly after his birth. With the arrival of a new sibling, Shen and June made their peace the best they could.

Around three years after Ming’s birth, June went to Central to devote herself to the studies of alchemy from a former state alchemist. Shen, actually having a functioning relationship with his elder sister at this point, followed her to central to attend the conservatory at central At some point during this time, June’s interest in alchemy lessened and her focus began to turn to forensics and the analysis there of. After five years in Central, Shen was still in the Conservatory, a rising star, and June was entering the State Military’s Investigative field. While the siblings did return home from time to time, most of their life was now in Central.

June met the Torrential Alchemist by accident, and everyone who knew the couple, despite the five-year age gap, knew it would only be a matter of time before they got hitched. It wasn’t until Shen had graduated the conservatory with high honors (aged seventeen) that the wedding was held (June was twenty at the time). Shen performed at the wedding, playing an original composition in honor of the occasion. By this point, Ming too was considering a career in the military, much to his parents’ dismay.

After the wedding, Shen joined a small musical group and began touring all over Armestis with them. During his travels, he was exposed to many who treated the blind and those like the blind as almost subhuman. While he had been exposed to little of this prejudice, the sheer depth that it went to proved to be deeply shocking to the young man. It was also during his travels that he learned to hate ‘cult figures’ as he learned that few of these cult leaders could deliver what they promised their followers, and it seemed unspeakably cruel to Shen to get people’s hopes so high for nothing in exchange.

Shortly after his twentieth birthday, Shen and his group gave a performance at the Xing border region. It was late at night and Shen insisted on walking back to the hotel alone. He never knew what happened, only that he heard the tell tale sound of gunfire one moment too late. The murder wasn’t intended, it was an accident really. The bullet had been intended for someone else, instead it ricocheted off the wall and through his windpipe, killing him almost instantly. His family found out about his murder days before June went into labor with her first son, a child she named partially in honor of her dead sibling.

Two months after his death, Shen was…resurrected after a fashion. Apparently one of the attendees of his last performance was a powerful alchemist who didn’t want the music to die. The months after his resurrection, Agony spent trying to get used to all of the new sensory information he had to deal with. During this time, he did little except eat red stones and focus on creating an alias. He eventually constructed several, roughly three years after ‘his’ death, Agony.

He has spent the last thirty years on the move, doing little in the way of service to his fellow Homunculi. Still, from time to time he has decided to work with the other Homunculi. Agony knows just enough about the man Shen to have kept an eye on his family. He even went into Ishbal to attempt to protect Ming. However, even with all the power that Agony had, he could not prevent Ming from dying. Since the Ishbal incident, Agony has mostly flitted on the edges of civilization, not daring to go back to where ‘Shen’s’ family was.

RP Sample:

Agony sat with his back against the wall. The eyes that would betray him as blind were closed. All around him, he heard people moving on their daily business at the train station. It was a day like any other, so no one really paid all that much attention to someone who was half asleep, waiting for a train to arrive or depart. It was hardly as if the Homunculus was the only one who had time to spare before their train left. There was no need to pay any attention. Besides, if anyone spotted the Ouroboros mark, concealed by the black hair falling over his hears, Agony had more than enough sound hear to cause panic, chaos, and ample amounts of pain.

As the made entity sat with these reflections, it noticed something. There was a heart that was beating entirely too slowly to be functionally human. It was some two hundred yards away, at a rough estimation. Agony actually stood up for this. There was another Homunculus here. He couldn’t tell which one, at least not yet. A trait of being a Homuculi was a severely slowed metabolic rate. Few humans could function with the minimum amounts of energy that powered a Homunculus. Agony’s ears darkened just slightly as the Homunculus began focusing in on the sound of the low, slow heartbeat. Which one was it, he wondered.
