The Metalloid Alchemist
[OOC: This is a character I had on the site a while back that I kind of offed as I did not know how much time I would have this school year. Feeling a bit evil and noticing that you guys were trying to puff up the player base I was wondering if I could turn her into a villian. If not feel free to delete this, otherwise I hope to have my fun ^^;]

Name: Sorrow
Alias/Nickname: Due to the fact that the miltary has unconfirmed reports of her death, she has often gone by her former name Devyn
Age: Six months
Gender: Female
Race: Homunculus
Nationality: Amestris (originally from New Hiessgart)

Height: 5’3’’
Weight: 50.8 kilograms
Eye Color: Slate grey. They used to be brighter but upon her death they seem to have gained a certain sadness to them, aptly fitting with her name.
Hair Color: Considered a strawberry blonde, she has tawny blonde hair peppered with auburn highlights.
Hair Style: Worn in loose curls around her shoulders as it falls to her mid-back, people who knew her as Devyn have told her it makes her look innocent.

Clothing/Garb: Sorrow's wardrobe is slightly different from her human predecessor. Gone is the navy blue uniform of old that marked her as a Major in the Amestris military. Instead, the homunculus prefers wearing tight fitting, long sleeved shirts of various dark colors like dark blue, black, and violet that show off her athletic figure.

She can still be found in khaki cargo pants and combat boots on the occasion she feels like fighting but her entire appearance seems to be much more relaxed than the pressed and polished officer she once was. And while it once seemed like an act of God to do so, Sorrow has often been seen wearing skirts or dresses. If the occasion calls for it, the homunculus will show a bit more skin to draw attention to herself, though the reasons she does so don't always have a happy ending...She also remains cautious of showing anyone the Ouroboros tattoo on her left clavicle so the idea of wearing anything daring does come at a price.

Pet Breed: You really want a homunculus to have a pet?

Personality: Cautious and calculating, Sorrow came into being unsure of her purpose in life. Because of this, many of her actions seem to have a noticable insecurity until she finds a true motivation that drives her into nearly manic behavior. The most she remembers about her past is that she died looking for something, and it seems to be the driving force that guided her back to Amestris. She doesn't know how she got there, only that she is forced to stay until she has fulfilled the unknown task that brought her back from death. Sorrow isn't a homunculus that seems particularly thrilled about being resurrected from the dead, and the ambiguity of her existance drives her mad with frustration sometimes.

As such, she often finds herself listening to those around her in order to create for herself a "mission" or task she has to complete. Whether this involves sneaking information to an unknown source or killing a target, the tasks are often very similar to the missions she once had as Devyn but she goes about them without any rhyme or reason. There is a veritable stone wall built up around what little feelings she has left, complete with a noticable sadness that has her wanting only to be left in peace...and she'll do whatever it takes to get there.
Likes: Semi-automatic weapons, bullet casings, anything metal, peace and quiet
Dislikes: Noise, large crowds, people that ask too many questions

Skills: As a homunculus, Sorrow has increased physical strength which makes it easy for her to complete her self-assigned "tasks." Being as young as she is however, any unique skills she posesses are relatively unpredictable. Her primary abilities are focused on her voice which has an almost siren-like quality to it that can come with a deadly price.

Arya: With or without words, the sound of this particular singing is powerful enough to leave victims in a temporary state of paralysis (provided they can hear it of course). Those affected suffer a rather severe case of muscle stiffness, that starts off as a sluggishness in movement and can freeze someone in their place if heard long enough, leaving them vulnerable to attacks.

Dolore: Her strongest skill, Dolore is another method of singing with a notably tragic sound which puts anyone within hearing range under a temporary hypnosis. In this state, victims can relive some of their saddest memories which often dulls them enough that Sorrow can gain a few extra seconds to strike.

Weapon(s) of choice: The desire for firearms has not left Sorrow since her former life. She is still an excellent marksman but due to her unpredictable state, she finds she can be more creative than a bullet to the chest. Even still, her 9mm Luger pistol is often found in a holster at her left leg, much like it was in her former life.

Transportation: On foot

Family:
Father- Colonel Roger T. Catherwood (Retired)- 55
Mother- Ellen Hillshire Catherwood- Deceased
Brothers-
State Alchemist Major Erik Catherwood- Deceased
Major James Catherwood- Deceased

History:

On a cold December night, Lieutenant Colonel Roger T. Catherwood held a tiny bundle in his arms, rocking it gently back and forth as his exhausted wife Ellen slept nearby. Two grey eyes and a dusting of auburn curls smiled back at him as the baby girl giggled once before falling fast asleep in the quiet military hospital.

No one in the family expected Ellen’s last child to be a girl so Devyn’s birth came as a bit of surprise. She was supposed to be named after her grandfather, a prestigious alchemist who had served in the Amestris army over eighty years ago. But somehow the name Devyn stuck, and aside from her parents who called her “Vinnie,” no one thought any different of it.

As a child, she grew up in the town of New Hiessgart, several miles outside the borders of Central City. Born into a military family, she was expected to uphold a strong legacy before she could even walk…made doubly hard by the fact that she was a little girl living in an age ruled by men. Her father was a well known officer, hand selected with his men to help maintain the safety of several research facilities within the area under strict observation of the state. Her grandfather and her great- grandfather had been decorated heroes and when she was two, her eldest brother Erik began his apprenticeship to a state alchemist at the age of eleven.

Life was simple and pleasant in New Hiessgart, both Devyn and her second brother Jaime, older by four years, showed early signs of alchemic ability when they were toddlers. Plans were being put into motion for the two of them to receive tutoring when they came of age but that was not to last. Although she can barely remember it now, three years later at the age of five she lost her mother in a tragic accident when the town became overrun with chimeras.

The family escaped to the hills but while her mother carried Devyn to safety she was attacked during the evacuation. A loud piercing scream and two long scars on the back of her left palm are all she remembers from the event, that and her older brother Jaime saved her from being the second victim of the lab-created monster. The handkerchief she carries is the only thing she really has left from her birthplace, that and the memories of her mother.

Mourning the loss of his wife, the Lieutenant Colonel moved his family to Central where he was demoted two ranks. Growing up after that, without a female figure in her life Devyn knew very little of dolls and teaparties. She did however, know how to climb trees, play a game of catch, and throw garden snakes at the neighbors. Erik became the motherly figure of the family…well suited with his continuing study of medicinal alchemy and plants and Jaime was her partner in crime and closest friend. Their father meanwhile, threw himself into his work at Central, fighting his way back to his old position as if it would somehow erase the events from New Hiessgart.

At the age of eleven, her brother Erik took the State Alchemist Exam and passed with flying colors. Fortunately for him, an elder apothecary from the country of Xing had continued with his teachings and his skills had flourished. He joined the army at twenty with the name the “Green Thumb Alchemist,” and it became an important turning point in Devyn’s life.

While Erik continued to watch over her and Jaime, her eldest brother spent less and less time with them in their small house and more time on missions. Fortunately he was able to pass on some of those motherly skills to his two younger siblings and Jaime and Devyn grew even closer during the time he was gone.

But it was not as easy as it looked. At fifteen, Jaime hadn’t pursued his interest in alchemy like his brother but he had taken up his father’s interests in the military. His schooling sent him away to a young military academy and the only choice for Devyn seemed to be the boarding school for young ladies nearby. Unfortunately for her…once a tomboy always a tomboy seemed to be the method she lived by and Devyn merely tolerated the school of embroidery mixed in with worldly academics. She never seemed to fit in, her dreams always stayed on ideas of joining the army with her brothers and becoming a lieutenant of her own some day. While she was isolated from the other girls in the school she visited Jaime as often as she could and graduated at the age of sixteen. By this time women were slowly but surely being accepted into the military and with skills in languages as well as world literature (she’d also given up the study of alchemy) there was a good chance Devyn could make her dreams come true.

At the time of her graduation, her father had been reinstated as a Lieutenant Colonel and with Jaime stationed at a branch of Central and Erik taking on fewer missions, their family was together once more. Devyn dazzled her brothers and father with her newfound cooking skills and alarmed the Colonel when she told her dad her plan to enlist as soon as she was eighteen. While he was strictly against it…the idea of his little girl participating in any real conflict seemed very unlikely at the time. Perhaps she could become a private at the central library with her love of books. Even so…she began to learn how to fire a gun at sixteen, having secretly had the chance when she was much younger, and she became a fair shot with a pistol (for protection purposes only…).

Unfortunately for them all…a year later war broke out in Ishbal and both of her brothers were sent to the East. Erik, as an alchemist, held a healing job at the front lines and Jaime was not far behind leading a strike team of his own. Devyn lived alone with her father for another year before the news came that Major Erik Catherwood had been killed in the line of duty during an Ishbalan riot. Those few simply words on a piece of paper ripped through the family and no more than six months after that, her father humbly resigned from his duties. Devyn was heartbroken at the loss of her family member and she saw that the event haunted Jaime during a short leave he was given in the time that followed.

With two family members gone from incidents in the military, one might have thought it would dampen Devyn’s resolve to enlist. By then her father was too wrapped up inside himself to take notice when Devyn became eighteen. She ignored any advances from the dashing young boys that caught her eye more determined than every to uphold her family name and to make a stand on her own. Two months after her eighteenth birthday, Devyn became a Private First Class in the Amestrian Investigations Division and followed her brothers into Ishbal in a desk job.

While she started with a desk job, an incident in the year that followed involving enemy spies and the apprehension of several intelligence reports bumped her up to Corporal status. Only then it seemed did her remaining family realize that the “Catherwoods little girl,” was putting herself in the line of fire…and dealing quite well. Ignoring the scores of letters she received in the desert telling her to come home and find a safer job, Devyn threw herself into her military career like her father. Thanks to her gift of languages and the undercover skills she developed in the war, she slowly climbed the ranks of the intelligence division. First to Second Lieutenant, and finally to Major with a newly acquired alchemy. Along the way she made new friends and kept them close as well as learning a little bit more about the workings of Central and her brother's mysterious disappearance.

However as time passed, while Devyn made friends and new family she also became slowly sucked into to the world of a military dog. It wasn't something she minded, but as long as she wore the uniform, her job would come before anything else in her life. When war broke out in Aerugo Devyn was among the first of troops called to defend Amestris. She was headstrong and wanted to do her part. With power in the military her career came to take hold of much more of her life and when her fiance refused to accept that fact, she left him to fight a war.

Months after the battles were finished she limped back to Central a changed woman, only to find that her fiance, whom she'd come to regret leaving in the midst of battle had lost his memory. Fayt, just as confused as her, was unsure what to do about their relationship and Devyn reacted in fear by throwing herself even further into her work. It was a mission in Drachma that cost Devyn her life. Now as an alchemist in the intelligence division, her skills were highly prized. Bullet manufacturing in Central changed due to her reasearch and yet through all her accomplishments, Devyn couldn't help feeling more alone than ever.

It was during a routine check of a Drachma miltary base that Devyn made the fatal mistake of losing her cover and she was shot through the temple and in the chest before she even knew what had happened. She died holding her engagament ring in her hand.

Everything was peaceful for a while after that. The calm darkness of death, sleeping in the gate between the worlds as another Devyn continued to live her life, the Metalloiod Alchemist was content. But her peace was not to last long as three months from the anniversary of her death something...caused her eyes to open.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was cold...she could feel wind blowing across her skin as loud grating sounds penetrated her eardrums, jarring the girl from the comforting black. She tried to stand...to gain her bearings but found herself frozen in place as a flat grey eye looked out around her. She was in a room somewhere, she could smell the musky scent of earth and chemicals...and there was some marking...drawn around her body.
She became afraid of the strange place as her heart beat faster...but it was so loud...how could she hear it like that? What was going on? The next thing she knew a giant of a man with sad eyes was towering over her, muttering something in a language she distantly recalled to be from Xing. He pressed his palms to the edges of the array as she tried to reach a hand out to stop him but it was too late. With a flash of blinding white light a shock of pain ran through her body...or what was left of it...and she cried out in agony
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was Fa Liu, her dead brother's mentor that had brought the youngest Catherwood back to life...mostly. She never forgot the haunted look in his eyes as he monotonously took care of her, barely saying a word, seemingly in shock of what he'd done. When she discovered as her eyesight gradually returned, that her body had initially been nothing more than a mass of festering organs she screamed in rage, wanting to attack the man that had done this to her. But she was too young, too weak to do anything and slowly retreated into herself...biding her time.

Devyn Catherwood was a thing of the past, but Sorrow, the giant of a man told her, was her new name. He coined the term from her haunting singing and wailing he'd heard the first few weeks of her development. When she was strong enough to move, Fa Liu stayed with her, helping her to learn to walk, to speak again, to remember bits and pieces of the person she once was. And Sorrow hid those thouoghts inside of herself and waited further. She honed her voice into a deadly ability that culminated in one night of a killing spree that took the lives of Fa Liu and his young niece Jiang Li who had come to his aid. They both died from the bullets of her old Luger pistol with looks of pity on their face, further aggravating Sorrow's already frazzled mental state.

Killing in Xing became a way to mask the overwhelming guilt and stress she felt knowing she came back looking for something, but not remembering what that was. The old man told her with his last few breaths that it was not her time to die...but she couldn't understand why that would make him bring a dead person back to life. Her skills in stealth came in handy as she made her way across the countries. Sporadic killings were heard of throughout Xing and Aerugo, even in the outskirts of Amestris in New Heissgart (she'd gone home to visit family ironically enough), but no one would contribute them to an alchemist MIA on the borders of Drachma. The only thing people remember nowadays about Sorrow as she leaves murders and destruction in her wake, are her slate grey eyes and a strange tattoo on her left breastbone as she continues to search in Central for the one thing she feels will lead her back to an eternal sleep...

"Have you ever fired a gun before?"
"Yes, many many times."
"Why would such a lady do that?"
"Because there is always someone I want to protect"
