Name| Kiya

Age| 20 Turns

Gender| Female

Orientation| Heterosexual

Rank(s)| Wingrider in Fire Flight Wing

Weyrmate| Searchrider G'had, rider of blue Isaiath

Romantic Interests| Searchrider G'had, rider of blue Isaiath

Appearance| At 5'7 and of light build, Kiya is one of those people that are noticeable from a distance with long, ebony black hair, cerulean blue eyes, and deeply tanned skin. Her frame is lean, despite being a rider. Her hands, although calloused from work, do have the appearance that she works to try and soften them to the quality of a Lady Holder. She tends to wear undyed, loose gowns or riding pants and a loose, undyed top. She takes great pride in her long hair and spends several candlemarks a day taking care of it and putting it up for riding safely. She has never once thought of cutting it off.

Personality| Kiya used to be wary and easily frightened of the slightest things. Over the Turns since arriving and Impressing, this has mellowed out and she's become quite personable and friendly. Though still easily frightened, she is better able to cope and work through it and doesn't shut down like she used to. She is still afraid of many things including Threadfall, tunnel snakes, and needles. But not raqs. Being a Runner most of her adolescence has tempered that fear into a calm knowledge of what to do to get through the Forest without encountering the beasts. And, well, if she did run into them, she knows it doesn't really matter what you do at that point. Your time has come. Shame she doesn't seem to have that mind set about anything else.
Kiya is unsure of many, many things. She needs reassurance from friends for almost everything, including things she knows she has talent with. Kiya values her family and close friends above all else and their support is what keeps her motivated to keep trying at everything in this scary world. She's terrified that G'had may not come back from a Search one day. She doesn't know what she'd do without her Harper bluerider.

History| Born in Canargen Hold to a small herder and a local midwife, Kiya was always a shy child, preferring to follow her parents around and running messages rather than socializing and playing with other kids.
Kiya was good at one thing as a kid: running. She loved to do it. It made her an obvious choice for the Runnercraft. Starting off with internal hold messages, she quickly worked her way up the ranks to long distance running. By the age of ten, she was a routine Runner to the other major Holds, trusted to get there without delay, distraction, or curiosity as to what she was delivering. She even delivered to the Weyr itself once or twice (but that was really, really scary and she didn't like being so near the den of man-eating dragons).
This kept up until Kiya had nearly 15 Turns. She loved the job, but knew her time with it was likely coming to a close. She was getting to an age where her family was thinking of marriage and children, not running messages through the Dark Forest. The Lord of Deep Forest Hold at the time, Patsediese, had expressed an interest in keeping her, already having made advances on the girl that she was powerless to refuse. Kiya had become uncomfortable going to Deep Forest Hold, but that was also her main route. She had no real say in the matter. During her stays at the Hold, she met and befriended a short, buxom, loud girl named Nicla. Though an unlikely pair, the two got along well enough. The loud and, frankly, obnoxious Nicla was happy to talk Kiya's ear off and Kiya was just glad for some familiar company to greet her every time she was there. Also, the girl was annoying enough to others that she kept unwanted attention at bay.
Things changed for Kiya one day on her way back from a run. Heading off the trial briefly, she came across a lunnew clutch. Thinking only of how much they could be worth for her family, she quickly and carefully put the eggs into her messenger bag, stuffing it with leaf material to keep them warm and separated. Eggs secured, she began to head off again. Only to come across a tan lunnew. Who was rather furious that her clutch was missing. Kiya was lucky that it was a lone tan rather than a whole pack (as lunnews tended to live). Also that she was fast at running. She was unable to avoid or lose the fuzzy small dragon relative and sustained several injuries in the process. Again, through luck, she managed to run into the territory of another lunnew pack. One that did not take well to a strange tan flying about making a ruckus. The pack attacked the tan lunnew and Kiya was able to escape. Panting and getting her bearings back, she realized she was closest to the Weyr. And that would be the best place to take the eggs since she wasn't sure she could get them to Canargen or Deep Forest without them losing too much heat. She'd just been there delivering a letter not a sevenday ago. She could get there, brave the man eating dragon monsters to recoup her energy, then get back to Canargen as soon as she could.
The Weyr was surprised to see her. Though it was a time of relatively "good" relations with the Holds, Runners weren't a common sight when firelizards and lunnews were so readily available to Weyrfolk. And injured Runners with bags of lunnew eggs were certainly a rarity. They quickly put the eggs on warm sand and herded her to the healers to be tended to. This suited her just fine, since it limited how much she actually saw of the Weyr. Dragons were terrible things of nightmares as the holds told it. And here she was, in their very den. She had planned on just sneaking out with the eggs and some sand to run back to Canargen. Then the eggs hatched unexpectedly. Allowed to be present at the hatching, since she brought the eggs, she Impressed her first pet-- brown Terre. The event left her in a rather talkative mood and the Weyr learned from her just how bad the Holds thought of the Weyr. They knew the Holds were disdainful but... really? That terrible, huh?
Relations crashed immediately. News of a possible revolt against the Weyr spread. Then actually happened. The Weyr quelled the unruly holders of Deep Forest Hold, however temporarily, but the aftermath meant that Kiya could not leave the Weyr for her own safety.
Kiya did not do well being confined in a place she had been raised to fear. Though she had bonded, however slightly, with a few people in the Weyr, the vast majority were unfamiliar. They had strange customs and different manners of speaking (with so many from regions outside of the Deep Forest). She couldn't stay in the Lower Caverns. She stopped eating and wasn't sleeping. Her entire life had turned upside down. This was a place that was everything supposedly bad. And she had somehow, however inadvertently, helped them. And ostracized herself from her home in the process. There was only one person she would interact with at all-- the bluerider G'had. The Harper turned Dragonrider was a calming influence on her and he was able to coax her into eating and interacting a bit. It did not take long for it to be decided that she move into his weyr for the time being for the sake of her own health and well-being.
Their relationship blossomed slowly over time, though it was perhaps not unexpected given the circumstances. She was able to slowly work her way up to interacting with Isaiath without terror. And she had her pets as well as his to keep her calm. And music. Kiya was slowly coming around and accepting this new life as a weyrmate of a dragonrider.
Then a Hatching happened. She hadn't really wanted to go watch it, but G'had had insisted. And then there was a voice in her head. And an all consuming rush of feelings as her mind bonded with Anzuth, her new baby dragon. Rather than fall to her knees and cry over the orgasmic feelings of never being alone again, she was terrified. What was in her head?! Why was there one?! She didn't want a dragon! She never wanted a dragon! She hated them! And now she was stuck raising one! She had no idea what to do. G'had had to practically carry her down to the silver before the silver hurt herself trying to get into the stands. She was back to square one. Afraid of everything and not sure how life was going to go on.
Kiya did not to well in the Weyrling Barracks. At all. Surrounded by others who wanted this new joy as she herself refused to acknowledge it at all, she didn't exactly make many friends. Kiya fell back into insomnia and was often found just huddled in on herself in the back of the Barracks. Thankfully for everyone, Kiya did not actively wish the young dragon harm. She hardly took part in lessons, refused communication with her dragon, but would feed Anzuth and would bathe her (though perhaps not as often as she should have). G'had assisted here, trying to coax the poor girl out of her shell. And to accept the gift she'd been given. He knew she could be a wonderful dragonrider if she could just get past all of the brainwashing she was raised with. She did not graduate with the other Weyrlings. When Anzuth was large enough to fly, she moved back into G'had's weyr. This gave Kiya a reason to avoid lessons, even with all of G'had's attempts to reason with her. It was a long, incredibly slow process, but Kiya finally was able to get to a place where she could accept her dragon. And accept that she had a responsibility to Pern. She was finally able to graduate as a full rider. Threadfall still scares her. The entire idea of it is still utterly terrifying. But her confidence is building. Everything will turn out okay.
And then she decided to visit home. She missed her family terribly. And it had been a few Turns. So she hopped the short trip between and paid them a visit, never thinking that it would turn out like it did. Canargen holders are loyal to a fault, and her father was no exception. Yansov saw the silver dragon appear, saw his daughter (whom he had given up for dead) alive and riding said dragon, and knew immediately this was a gift for his Lord and that he would be rewarded for his loyalty. Lord Holder Tarinal of course wanted the girl brought to him and Yansov rushed back to his home to do as he was told. And then was surprised that there was now a bluerider at his residence. Blueriders were suspect. And this one fit the description for one notorious for stealing away young boys and girls from their families. He knew he needed to capture this monster in addition to his daughter. It was a holder's duty to his Lord. And Yansov had his son to think of. Before any of that could happen, however, a small pack of raqs appeared. They were chased off, but not before G'had and Isaith had apparently sacrificed themselves to protect Kiya and her mother Kiba. Well, if it couldn't work out well one way, this still left Yansov with his wife, his son, and his newfound ticket to prestige. The Lord's men were likely to kill the bluerider, anyway. Yansov dragged his distraught daughter to his lord.
Kiya could not be consoled. Her beloved G'had had died. And it was her fault for leaving on her own, against the wishes and best advice of those she relied on. Of the Weyr in general. And now she was pulled away from her family, as well. Why couldn't she just go home? Either home? She wanted her mother to hold and sooth her. She wanted to see Nicla and K'dar and Rune and everyone else she'd grown close to. She wanted G'had. She'd never hear Isaith's voice in her head again. She'd messed everything up!
Lord Holder Tarinal wanted to have her swear loyalty to her one true home-- Canargen. To serve him. A large dragon like Anzuth was a great boon to the hold. She'd have so many uses! Kiya refused. She just wanted to go home. No matter how many times she was told this was her home, she had had her loyalty broken by the Weyr and was no longer a dedicated citizen of Canargen. This incensed Tarinal. He tried every plot and ploy to get her to agree. Nothing worked. She did not want marks. She did not want material things. She did not want titles. Or prestige. Or power. She did not want for anything but what she could no longer have. Even her dragon being kept in poor conditions would not get her to agree. Anzuth was weakened and injured but Kiya was hurting too much from the loss of G'had and blame of it to separate her dragon's pain from that in her heart.
Cursing the Weyr for what it did to his citizens, turning them against their Lord, Tarinal gave Kiya a final choice in the matter. He had Yankib, her younger brother, brought to the large storage barn holding the silver. Kiya was dragged here. She had a simple choice to make. Serve him. She said no. Tarinal drew a blade and told her again to make a choice. Serve him, or she would be forced to lose more of what was close to her. Would she serve him? No? Then who would die? Yankib or Anzuth? Kiya had no answer to that. Her mind would be broken beyond repair if Anzuth died. She would not have a future at all anywhere in Pern. But she could not willingly let her little brother die. He was innocent in all of this! This brought her to her senses out out of her grief. Would she serve, then? No. Dragonriders did not serve the holds as beasts of burden. And how could she serve such a cruel man? Look at the situation he had put her in! Kiya felt helpless. Her mother, however, did not. Kiba, mother's instinct overriding any loyalty to anything other than her children, rushed into the barn, putting herself between her Lord and her children. She refused to back down. Tarinal killed her, Kiba taking her last breaths in her daughter's arms. This was exactly why they told the holders the Weyr was dangerous. Look at how quickly it caused rebellion in his citizens! He left Kiya to think about what she had caused and dragged Yankib off, tossing him to the drudges.
Kiya still refused. Even if she conceded to the demands given her, what would come from it? By not acquiescing earlier, she had gambled away any power or say in her future. She would be worse than a drudge. Even being holdless would be preferable to her seemingly bleak future. Anzuth convinced Kiya to keep fighting. Kiya had always fought for everything and, though afraid of so much, still had come so far. She could keep going. Putting her faith fully into her dragon for the first time in her life, Kiya quietly freed her dragon from her binds when she was not being watched. Under cover of darkness, Kiya and Anzuth broke out of the barn and rushed to rescue Yankib. Brother safely in hand, Anzuth took to the sky. Both weakened and not in her right state of mind, Kiya gave a bad image for between. They appeared above her home in Canargen. And it was daylight. And... that was G'had hurrying away into the the thin woods, being chased by raqs. Away from her... mother? And-- HERSELF?! Kiya had no time to figure all of this out! She had Anzuth fly off without thinking, going after G'had. The large silver, injured or not, along with Isaiath, were able to fend off the raq, though G'had was severely injured. Kiya gathered him up on Anzuth and, together, everyone betweened back to the Weyr.
Recovery was long and the Weyrleaders, once they had gotten sufficient information on what happened, decided that no one else was to know what happened. It made no sense in a world that had forgotten what Timing was. And it was for the best that no one else knew of it to try it themselves. Also, Relina's bitterness towards the holds grew more than it already had. If that was at all possible. Because no one-- no one harms her riders or their dragons. And Kiya and Anzuth were undoubtedly hers.
Things are better now. Kiya seems to be quite resilient to trauma and shows no real lasting effects from what happened to her. She's finally a full member of the Weyr and has come to terms and accepted that this is where she belongs. Now if she could just get G'had to like her friends...

Dragon Silver Anzuth

Dragon's Genetic Coding| XRXr ccBbSs

Dragon's Clutch| Vandrath 3

Dragon's Description| Anzuth is a lovely, although unusual, silver. Her body is almost white, and lacks the luster of the typical silver. But her wings are a dark, almost pewter color, glittering with the radiance of a rising gold against Rukbat. It's as if her coloring all was sucked up by her wings. She never could understand her rider's fear of her and other dragons when she was young, hurt when her rider became more frightened when the silver tried to comfort Kiya. Once Kiya accepted her and that dragons are not evil, Anzuth became a normal weyrling and demanded heapings of attention from her and anyone else. Anzuth is a calm, lazy dragon, who gets bored with other dragons easily. Except for when she's having one of her many protests against the oppressive golds D:! Revolt against the oppressive golds! Freedom for the common working dragon! She disdains authority and much prefers naps to lessons. And she loves her baths. She is around 31 meters (102 feet) long.
