Grocery shopping

For myself. For the first time.

Due to a sudden motivational piece, today I have decided to completely overhaul my diet by 1. picking what I eat, not letting others do it for me and 2. cooking my food myself. So I'm going grocery shopping in a bit. I wanted to know for those of you that already do this, how much does it cost to feed yourself properly per week? What kind of things do you get?

This is to start me on a seriously long self overhaul, with working out and all that soon to come.

For the fitness, I've been recommended a diet of 2,700 calories a day with strictly water. After a week I should begin "running and shit."

I was in the same boat you were. Started out 5'10, 240 lbs. Thought it was time to make a change. Also, I was playing baseball at the time, and I hit that spot where I couldn't rely on skill alone, and had to be more athletic (I played catcher).

So, I started buying my own groceries and making my own meals instead of eating my mother's. She actually helped me out in the beginning. I'm Italian, so meals in my household are huge and very fattening. What I did was drink only water, with two glasses of skim milk a day, and loaded up on protein. So try to find meats and fish. But with meat, make sure it is very lean. I advise you to invest in a George Forman grill. It cooks out most of the fat in meats. You can intake large amounts of protein without loading up the fat. Eat loads of vegetables. I don't like cooked veggies, so I ate broccoli and carrots and stuff raw, plus they retain all their nutrients that way. Eat foods like oatmeal for breakfast because it really gets your metabolism going in the morning. Try not to eat too much fruit, unless it is in the morning. Sure, fruit can be good for you, but it's full of natural sugar so your body still recognizes it as any kind of sugar so can actually gain weight. Cut out all fastfood whatsoever. While you transition into new eating habits, you also should start working out about one hour, five days a week, and then move it up to two hours per day after a few weeks. When you workout, your workout chart should look like this:

Monday: Chest/Shoulders/Arms
Tuesday: Quads/Hips/Calves
Wednesday: No lifting at all. Hit the treadmill. Start out at one mile and work your way up
Thursday: Chest/Shoulders/Arms
Friday: Quads/Hips/Calves
Saturday/Sunday: Rest up. You'll be pretty sore.

Chest workouts focus on bench press. Shoulders are lat pulldowns. Arm workouts are curls and other variations of curls.
Quad and calf workouts can be done simultaneously on a leg press machine. Hip exercises require no machines.
Treadmill is self-explanetory.

I know it's hard to keep at something like this. Believe me, I wanted to quit many times. But keep at it. I did all of this stuff for about four months and lost 25 lbs. I also gained a shitload of muscle. After several months of doing this, you can go back to your old eating habits, just as long as you keep up with your workouts. You body will still be adjusted to burning hundreds of calories off while you workout, so you should still be lean. You will be amazed how lean you will get as well as how much stronger you will be.

Hope this helps you to a healthier lifestyle. :)

Also as a sidenote, if you want abs then do some core workouts before you go to bed. This can include crunches, planks, and leg lifts.

I agree with most of what was already said. I need to get back in shape myself winters bad for me. I've stayed the same weight but I've just got more "rubbery" as where before I was pretty lean. Good luck sticking with it once you got a general day to day plan down its not to bad. I trained for a good 3-4 months along with soccer/track preparing for Marine Corps boot camp. I never did go but maybe some day in the future. You will feel/see the difference within a couple weeks tho I know I did.

YES. Very happy for you buddy. I just started living on my own (buying food and feeding myself as well) and it aint easy but it's rewarding. I thoroughly encourage you to keep pursuing this goal of overall health as it will be greatly rewarding.

I try to have vegetables and fruit more than anything else. I also cut out as much dairy as possible, because I feel it makes me slow and weighs me down, gives me allergies and stuff. But yeah.. a lot of fruits and veggies. One thing that's easy is getting frozen vegetables and just steaming them.
