LD debating is a single person vs. a single person event where each person agrues the moral view of a topic. Today's topic at the tourny was: In matters of U.S immigration policy, restrictions on the rights of non-citizens are consistend with democratic ideals. Basically the topic is about rather or not it's ok for the U.S to limit the rights of non-citizens. I then had to come up with speeches on why this is both right, the affimitive side, and wrong, the negative side. As some of you know, I've been working on these speeches for over a month and today was my furst tourny. I did badly but I don't see how I lost some rounds. Let's take a quick look at how each round went. Around 1: Aff- I knew I was going to lost this round half way through the debate. It was my first offical round and I was nervous beyond belief. I was shaking so bad, I had trouble getting up from my chair to speak. My opponent's contintions, points to back up his agruement and value, were very good. I lost conferdence in myself due to that and basically just let everything collapse which is somethign I won't let happen again. I basically gave in... Around 2: Neg.- I won this round because the judge said my opponent dropped my attacks against her statements. Around 3: Aff.- I don't see how I lost this round. Sure, my opponent had a good speech but after hearing both her Neg. and Aff. speeches, I'm pretty sure she didn't write it. I'm pretty sure that her coach wrote it for her because both speeches were to professionally written for someone in the begining class and no, that isn't counted as cheating... On top of that...she ignored half of the debate. For you see, my opponent didn't talk about illegal immirgrants at all even though they are non-citizens. She said they didn't count... Hmm...this debate is about restricting the rights of non-citizens both legal and illgel but my opponent said that illgel ones didn't matter. Around 4: Neg.- I won this round and I knew I did. During the cross examination, when the other side asks you questions about your statements...my opponent asked me if there were any rights that everyone was entitled to. At first, I began to think of some and was kind of stumbling but that's when I remember I had a copy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with me. I pulled out my little packet, showed it to my opponent, and said that these were rights that the UN agreed that everyone in the world should have and that these rights have been around since 1948. My opponent stared at the judge with her mouth open, glanced at me, and said "Uh.....um...ok let's move on..." Then while speaking, I had my eyes on the judge instead of my paper. I made some comment and I got positive feedback from the judge. He pointed to me and nodded. Then wrote down something. I knew then and there that I had this case closed. Around 5: Neg.- This round was ridiculous! For starters..the judge didn't even know how a LD debate ran. Then I don't think she paid any attention to my speeches. My opponent said that non-citizens should recieve driver's license till they become a citizen. I, as the neg., attacked that statement by saying that it's wrong to take away a license since these people need some way to get to their jobs or to the store to buy food for their families. Yet the judge wrote on my ballot, "I don't get how transportation is such as huge issuse." Um...I pointed out why! Then she said I sounded scared even though I had hand motions, was speaking loudly, and had eye contact with her. Sure, I was nervous but I wasn't scared and I certainly didn't let it stop me from speaking. I don't mean to sound like a sore loser...but I just don't get how I lost. |

Who came up with the name for it? Also, why do they change judges? |

I don't know...
They change judges so that the same judge isn't judging the same person with the same speech. |

I think I know what it's named after, Lincoln and Douglas ran against each other for president, but before that they had a debate for a woman. So I guess it's named after that debate. |
