Nintendogs (DS)![]() ![]() ![]() Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Nintendo Due to be Released on: Aug. 22, 2005 ESBR: E Simulation Last night I got an opportunity to play a five minute demo of Nintendogs. The demo might have been short and not all the features where available, but I have a pretty good idea on what the final product will be like. Story line- Nintendogs doesn’t have much of a story line. You’re basically a new pet owner. You plan to train the dogs so you can enter them in contests but most important, you want to raise them and love them. You start off at the kennel with a $1,000. You then pick one dog out of a number of different breeds and each breed comes in both male and female. Plus each puppy has a different color scheme. Once you purchase a dog, you can begin your training. Graphics- Nintendogs has the best graphics I’ve seen for the DS. Environments aren’t in real-time but they are fairly detailed. However objects in the background like trees or people are contests are in 2D. The puppies themselves are quite realistic. They don’t look blocky or polygonic like previous DS games like Super Mario 64 DS and Rayman DS. Even though fur isn’t in real time (which disappointing for long haired breeds), the color schemes match the dog breed in real life. The puppies’ movements are realistic as well. Tails wag as the puppy grows happier and tails droop as the puppy feels alone or sad. This gives you an idea of what the puppy is feeling. Facial features are another key point to telling the condition your puppy is in. You can see the look of exhaustion in the puppy’s eyes as bed time nears. The character animation is smooth as a silk dress. The puppies jump around the screens with easy. Sound- The audio is well done. Each breed has distinct bark which you’re learn to tell apart quickly amongst your tiny pack. Barks indeciduate how the dog feels. High pitched yips take place during play or very happy moments while low whimpers pour from the speakers whenever a puppy is saddened by something. Background sounds can be heard. While outside, you can hear the sound of birds chirping in the distance. There is some music in the game which is made of chimes and a xylophone. Gameplay- This is a very simple game. You pick a pup then raise it. Simple huh? The stylus is the key to Nintendogs. Basically everything you do will be down with this stylus. Accessing inventory screens, petting the puppy, brushing, bathing, playing, and so on is all controlled by the little gray stick. There are three versions of the game. Each plays the same but contain different breeds. The Chihuahua and Friends version comes with: Chihuahua, German shepherd, boxer, cavalier King Charles spaniel, Yorkshire terrier and Shetland sheepdog. The Dachshund and Friends version contains: miniature dachshund, golden retriever, beagle, pug, Siberian husky and Shih Tzu . Finally the Lab and Friends version contains: Labrador retriever, miniature schnauzer, toy poodle, Pembroke Welsh corgi, miniature pinscher and shiba inu. Innovation- Nintendogs might be a very simple and plain game but it’s the first DS game to use all of the DS’s features the way it was intended. Kirby Canvas was the first DS game to use the stylus correctly while Bomberman tried to use the microphone by having you yell “bomb” into it to activate an attack. Now imagine putting the two features together. That’s what Nintendogs does. As said before, the stylus is the key to controlling the game. The microphone is used to teach the dog it’s name and give it commands. Nintendogs also decently balances out the top and bottom screen; even though the bottom screen is used the most. The bottom screen is the main screen and contains your menus and inventory screens .Whenever the bottom screen is being used to look over supplies, the top screen shows your puppies wondering around. Whenever the bottom screen is in use to play with your puppies or care for them, the top screen is a bit of a status screen. It shows you the faces of your puppies to give you an idea on how they are feeling. Replay Value- From what I’ve read and played…I’d say med. You’ll have fun trying out each breed of dog and trying to unlock all the items. Plus there’s multiplayer in which you and your friends’ puppies can play together. However Nintendogs might be a one trick pony. Due to the plainness hidden underneath the game by cuteness, you’ll grow bored with it as time goes on. After all playing with a virtual puppy can only be fun for awhile. The Good- Besides Nintendogs using the DS’s abilities…It opens a door to though unfortunate who can’t have a real puppy. This is a great game to get an animal lover who lives in an apartment that doesn’t allow animals or for a child to be introduced into caring for an animal. The Bad- The game lacks depth. Nintendogs will at one point become a bore since it’s nothing more than the same old stuff but with a slightly different look. Also the idea of playing with fake puppies doesn’t appeal to many. Nintendogs is turning out nicely. It’s not for everyone but it’s worth looking into if your interested. Even though I have to deal with three dogs in real life, I'm still buying this one. |
