Resident Evil/Rant goddess

![]() Resident Evil 4 has been one of the top selling GameCube titles for the past few months. The game has sold over 500,000 copies itself since the release date back in January and with a PS2 version on the way with more cut scenes, unlockables, and bonuses…Capcom is sure to get the money they were hoping for when they developed the game. However, there is a secret to RE4’s past. The game was redesigned a total of four complete times before the team settled on what the game is now. ![]() The first RE4 (which I’m calling RE 3.5) originally seen at E3 ‘03 is thought to be the third redo for the game. The trailer showed Leon Kennedy wonder a dark mansion or castle. The corridors were long and spooky like the previous games in the series. Figures could be seen walking in the background and mysterious things would happen. The main thing pointed out in the trailer wad a large enemy that had sickles for hands. The creature would charge Leon, swinging wildly at his head. Other trailers of RE 3.5 still showed Leon and the sickle creature but they held another secret to the game. A black cloud would follow Leon in certain areas. This cloud was another virus that eventually takes over Leon’s body. In Electronic Gaming Monthly’s interview with the game’s producer, Hiroyuki Kobayashi, stated that in the game Leon would get a power of some kind in his left hand. You’re probably wondering what is going on by now. Mysterious man with sickles for hands…dark corridors…a new virus…Leon being infected? The story is very interesting and doesn’t leave a huge gap like RE4 did. RE 3.5 took place shortly after Code Veronica (January 1999). Leon joined up with an Anti-Umbrella team to take down the Umbrella’s last stand, their headquarters located in France. Not only was S.T.A.R.S suppose to be there to help, the headquarters also held Sherry Birkin prisoner. She was kidnapped shortly after surviving the T-Virus outbreak in Raccoon City because her pendent held the G-Virus which Umbrella wanted. While on his journey to find and free the young girl, he stumbles upon an abandon Umbrella building and flying fortress. He goes to investigate the building in hopes to discover more of the truth but gets discovered himself. The sickle creature was chained in the build but is now free. The creature wants nothing more than to serve Leon’s head to Spencer on a silver platter. The creature follows Leon around the areas much like the Nemesis did to Jill. Once again you can’t kill the creature till near the end of the game and only with the bullets from a plasma rifle. ![]() As for the cloud, it’s thought to be a mixture of the T and G virus. At one point it infects Leon. At first he’s ok but as the game goes on, Leon begins to mutate. Thus why Kobayashi probably mentioned Leon having a special power. One more interesting thing about the game is the fact that Leon has flash backs and hallucinations. As you should be able to tell, RE 3.5 was much more fear based than RE4. The game was centered around horror and was created to scare gamers. So then why didn’t Capcom release the game? According to Kobayashi, RE 3.5 just didn’t contain the leap forward they wanted to take with the series. So the game was scratched and redone. Sources: Game Informer #118, Electronic Gaming Monthly #190, and Cube #25 Some screenshots In my opinion...RE 3.5 was a much better idea. It started true to the series by still being a true survival horror game. The story line also followed the original series without the big gap. It had a suspenseful story line with many twist and turns...What more could you ask for? |

It looked better to me too. I saw a gameplay video for it and thought it lloked cool, and it even still had the hold R and gets close to the gun like RE 4. All I could see was that the camera was still stuck instead of behind you with the limited controls. Either way I would have bought it, but the story in this one actually sounded good. P.S. Great job with the board guys. Way better than the G4 forums are now. |
