Title: the Ring. Author: Rodlox. Summary: Nina and Diana have a little chat about her ring. Rating: K+ Coda to 'Suffer the Children'...just because. Only the original characters are my own; all others are canon and belong to the wonderful people who bring us _The 4400_. Author's notes: This was inspired by Purpleyin's comments on the subject over at 4400 Abductees. Spoilers: Wake-Up Call, Suffer the Children. ~~~ "Nice ring." "Thanks," Diana said to Nina, having been summoned to Jarvis' office, though she rather doubted it was to discuss the bit of shiny stone on a Skouris finger. "So Pacella finally got enough backbone to propose, did he?" Diana knew Nina well enough to know she was being complementary, a praise of sorts in her own way; her fiance'd rubbed off a little much, it seemed. Then again, Diana knew, she'd never known a Nina Jarvis before Nina's fiance'd introduced them. "He was taking his time." Nina didn't snort, but the sound she made just now was still one of disbelief. "I'll bet," in a tone that brooked no wagering, no gambling. "But that's not why I called you in here." I didn't think so, Diana thought to herself, but kept mum on the subject. Nina handed her a folder, said, "Read it, Skouris. And while you're in here -" Here it comes, Diana felt. "I want you to do something for me," Nina said and pulled the engagement ring off her own finger. Holding it out to Diana, "Give it back to him." "No." Ordinarily she wouldn't refuse point-blank a direct order made only three feet away, not unless it involved Maia, or even April. But on this subject, the book was closed, no more favors would be done. "'No'?" "No. You proposed to him, he accepted; so that makes you responsible for returning the ring." "You see him more than I do." "I saw him last...five years ago." Nina's face was implaccable. "Given your role in everything, I feel its best if you return it." Great, not only does April blame me for the failure of her marriage, but now you blame me for your engagement not working?? "I had nothing to do with any of that. And don't say I got between you two, or that I tried to sabotage your relationship." "I wasn't about to say either. But surely he asked you for your opinion about me." To that, Diana nodded. "Well?" "Now that makes me complicit? I told him to trust himself and to trust his faith," for she'd known him, known his priorities, known them since childhood. "You talk to my brother," and, with that, turned to leave: she had a folder to review. "This isn't over, Skouris," Nina said as Diana headed for the door. Leaving, Diana said to herself, "I didn't think so." ~~~~~~~~~ the end. |
